We always stay in Bollo Apts right off Campo dei Fiori. You can check it out on booking.com as well. Very walkable but within a block of Vittorio Emmuale and about 8 buses.
rometoolkit.com might help a first time visitor. Farnese Palace is around the corner from the hotel but has limited tours. Fortunately in Nov on our 5th visit to Rome were there on a tour day.
