Anything interesting between Florence and Venice?
Are there any interesting places to stay between Florence and Venice that might rival a stay in Tuscany region around Siena? We have limited time in Italy and our second time around for Venice, but wanted to show the kids Venice. Thought we might find a place to stay between Florence and Venice and make day trips to see the sites of both. Good thought, but bad idea?

I'd stay in Venice-don't do it as a day trip. Verona is a good day trip from Venice but keep in mind that it takes a long time to get anywhere in Venice - either slow vaporettos or long walks to train station. You are much better off to stay in Venice, see the sights and then move on. That being said don't skip Venice!

Look at the map and decide which daytrips you're likely to make, then consider Padua (Padova) as an alternative to Venice. It's a nice old compact city on the major train line, usually cheaper to stay in than Venice, but you can be there in under a half hour, and go in the other direction, too (Verona etc.). For daytrip to Florence it's a bit far, I'd stay in Florence first, then decide on what I just suggested - Padova as an alternative to Venice.
