Both Munich and Salzburg are about an hours drive. I know a girl who lived there and went back and forth to work in Salzburg, so it's really not too far.
The traffic is usually heavier towards Munich, if this makes any difference.
It's a very nice part of Germany.

Prien am Chiemsee is the perfect spot if you want to do day trips in the area from Munich to Salzburg - - - Munich (56 minuites by train, with Bayernkarte about $28 R/T; Salzburg (about the same distance costs as Munich). I would not recommend Munich or Salzburg by car. Train is much more convenient and no peroblem with parking.
Half day tours: King Ludwig's palace on Herrenchiemsee Island; boats leave from Stock, 20 minutes walk or short ride on old steam train from center of Prien; Reit im Winkel,- a picture postcard Bavarian village; can be reached by car or bus. Aschau and gondola lift to top of Kampenwand; can be reached by car or rail bus.
Day trips: Berchtesgaden; scenic road B-306/B305, take Siegsdorf exit Munich - Salzburg autobahn, or train in direction of Salzburg with change in Freilassing.
Other day trips by car:Tegernsee, Zell am See, etc.
Several decent restaurants and hotels in Prien and Prien Stock.
There is a very nice restaurant overlooking the Chiemsee and mountain background, called Malerwinkel, reachable by car.
If you want more info.let me know.

You might wanna check out this site:

I have it bookmarked so I can watch the people in the hot tub while the lake behind them is frozen over.

treplow,
Thanks for the info. This is the place we're thinking of staying. We'll have our daughters with us (ages 5 and 8 when we go in 7/2007), and this looks like a great place to stay that's right near Prien. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. My email is: [email protected]
