artsnletters, I bought a 1974 film, Caravan to Vaccares, based on the Alitair MacLean book. It stars Charlotte Rampling as is photographed in the Camargue and Les Baux.
Not too many films I recall filmed there. There's one scene in A Man and a Woman.

Don't think I saw this one in the list - Paris Blues. 1961, in black and white starring Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier as jazz musicians, along with their girlfriends Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carroll - sweeeeet!

Girl Cut in Two (La Fille coupee en deux) is in theatres presently. It is a clever movie showing the dynamics of a young woman and her two suiters, one old and famous and the other young, wealthy and unbalanced, how they use her and how she reacts and copes. Location: Lyon.

Last night I went to see "Welcome to the Sticks" - a French comedy which is set in the north of France. The scenery is quite nice but it is the funniest movie that I have seen for ages. I'm still chuckling every time I think about it.

ANother recommendation for the Three Colours trilogy - absolutely exquisite film-making.

A few more ideas:
Le Diner de Cons is one of the funniest films I've ever seen and was a huge hit in France. Unsure of the title in English but definitely worth seeking out.

Les Enfants du Marais - rather nostalgic and idealised take on life and friendship in rural France, but lovely to watch

Les Amants du Pont Neuf - love story between homeless people in Paris - rather beautiful, stars Juliette Binoche

ANd of course, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, and the splendid Cyrano de Bergerac with Dépardieu in the lead role.

PS Underhill, you did mean Mr Hulot's Holiday, right? ;-)

Les Choristes
Ever After (filmed in the Dordogne)
My Best Friend

For a fascinating documentary, The Sorrow and the Pity

The Dinner Game is the English title of Diner de Cons. I agree with hanl, it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

I still think the 1978 French version of La Cage aux folles was one of the funniest movies ever.

Comedies to take you further south:

A sweet classic from the 30's: La Femme du Boulanger or The Baker's Wife.

Les Comperes. Youngish Depardieu.

If you go to netfilx and look under foreign films (French) you will be able to find many French film and a short synopsis of each.

"The Day of the Jakal" by Frederick Forsyth. The book is better than the film. Suspense.

"Un Homme et Une Femme" aka A Man and a Woman.

Another vote for "French Kiss."

I think that the ORIGINAL film of "Day of the Jackal" was terrific, just as good as the book. That one starred Edward Fox, in perhaps his best role ever. Definitely worth watching.

The remake with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere...no, no, no.

I just recently noticed all the replies I received on this. Thanks!
I ended up with Mr Bean's Holiday, which was funny. But the best one was of course La Vie On Rose about Edith Piaf. That movie was outstanding and so very interesting.
She died so young!
Thanks for all your help!

Thin - I was also going to recommend Repulsion & Diabolique! Remember that episode of Ab Fab when Patsy has the dream sequence that is exactly from Repulsion?

Also, La Femme Nikita with Anne Parillaud and La Femme d'à Côté with the stunning beautiful Fanny Ardant, and the Umbrellas of Cherbourg, another Catherine Deneuve movie.

For a different view of Paris a couple of great films are La Haine and The Beat That My Heart Skipped (De battre mon coeur s'est arrete).

2 new ones and both excellent are

Tell No One
Un Secret

2 of my all time favorites are the 2 with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy

Before Sunrise and then the followup film Before Sunset.

I recommend all of the above.

Just making sure Schnookies isn't disappointed: Before Sunrise takes place in Vienna, not Paris; Before Sunset is in Paris. They are BOTH wonderful (although Before Sunset is my favorite), and it's best to watch Sunrise first, as it introduces the characters; Sunset takes place 10 years later.

I agree it is good to watch both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset in order to understand the characters. I listed B Sunset because it is the one set in Paris
