Any experiences with Air Lib Express?
While looking for a cheaper one-way flight from Paris to Florence in May, I found Air Lib Express which was selling a 12Euros ticket (to Pisa) vs 750Euros for Air France. It looks like a great deal, but I'm a little nervous about a $12 plane ride. Has anyone had any experiences with them?
http://www.air-liberte.fr/
thanks.

From http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=34383704

Autho r: mjs ([email protected])
Date: 12/27/2002, 05:00 pm

Message: Flew Airlib in November Venice to Paris.
As above posters have noted E30 vs E180 per ticket. This really adds up if you have more than one ticket to buy. I would also much rather spend a night in a decent hotel than on any train. Will have to watch Airlib's financial status as they might go under. Pay with a credit card and you should be protected from any financial loss. Keep an alternative plan ready. Good luck.

========================

I think that this is the only personal experience that anyone has cited so far here on this forum.

see also http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=34375766

Best wishes,

Rex
We flew them last Feb. from Paris to Nice and then from Perpignan to Paris. Bought the tickets quite cheaply on Expedia. Don't really know how to evaluate the company since our first flight had mechanical problems.

We took off from Paris and the plane was absolutely freezing. It was also quite strange that after 9/11 the door to the cockpit was open and tht you could see all the instrument lights glowing. My husband was looking out the window and commented on how low the plane seemed to be flying. This went on for about 10 minutes and then they came on with an announcement in French (good thing I can understand some French since the message was not given in English). The announcement was that the plane had mechanical problems and we were returning to Paris to get another plane. My husband also thought the pilot was having some problems in handling the plane when we approached Paris again. We landed in Paris uneventfully, and were all on another plane and left within an hour. After that, the flight to Nice and then the flight from Perpignan to Paris were both fine. So, I don't know if this was just an isolated event or a common occurrence for this airline. I'd be interested to know if anyone who has any knowledge of plane mechanics has a comment.

As I posted on another thread several weeks ago, the next big deadline for Air Lib is the expiration of their goverment airworthiness certificate at the end of this month. Negotiations with the dutch IMCA group for new financing are ongoing, but no deal has been signed as of yet.

Without a cash infusion, they will most probably forced to close down at the end of the month - however this being France, everything is eminently "political" (read subject to lobbying pressure by unions etc.), so you never know.

Book at your own risk...

Andre

As I feared, Air Lib's planes were grounded as of today - it's over for them.

This is certainly bad news for travelers looking for low cost flights to/from Paris in the short run. But in the medium term, expect EasyJet and/or new entrants to snap up Air Lib's slots at Orly and offer affordable service to short haul destinations.

Hope this helps,
Andre
