Another Munich/Bavaria Itinerary Question
I saw Swanner's post that they (fellow Phoenix dwellers) are headed to the area, but didn't feel it was correct to inject my own itinerary questions and hijack the post!
So - we only have 3 nights in the Munich area in June, 2014.
Plan A - Spend all 3 nights in Munich and try for side day trips (we not much for organized tours); or
Plan B - Rent a car at the airport (yes we've frequently driven in Germany), stop at Dachau and after Dachau loop around and spend the first night close to where we could then the next day see Neuschwanstein and/or any other of the "King's Castles." After doing this: (1) drop off the car in Munich and see the sights, or (2) keep the car and use it for airport transportation.
Regarding Plan B: recommended places to stay in the outlying area?
Thoughts on above?

I personally would stay in Munich. It's a great city for 3-5 days, but not too much longer than that.
Plenty of public transportation to/from the airport.

Fussen makes a nice regional town to stay in - lots of nice cozy guest houses - few of the hoards that trek out to Mad Ludwig's Castles every linger in Fussen or even see it but it is a very nice town - take a walk along the roaring river and you'd think you out in the wilds.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also a town that could be on a circular tour - you can take a mountain train up top of the Zugspitze.
As for Munich the town always underwhelmed me but if into museums and palaces or BMW museums or tours I guess those could occupy a few days - otherwise the compact town center to me causes little reason to linger.
I enjoyed more the Bavaria outside Munich but this is all a subjective feeling - about Munich itself, many love and rave about it.

Thanks for comments. Our plane arrives at about 8:00 a.m. and doesn't depart until 4:00 p.m. so we'll have some time on day of arrival and morning of departure.

Some suggestions --
1) Read the various posts on this site and others about the relative merit of making the trip to Neuschwanstein. Many people suggest skipping, especially if your time is short.
2) Another option for a visit outside of Munich is the village of Oberammergau. It is an easy drive south of Munich. Quaint little village which is the site of the Passion Play every 10 years since the 1600s. From there you can make the short drive to another of the castles - Linderhof.
3) Dachau -- worth the visit if you have not been to a concentration camp, but it should not take more than a couple of hours at the most.
4) I agree with the earlier post that Munich proper can be underwhelming. The city can easily be covered in two days or less.
5) When in Munich - stop at the Dallmayr shop, a short walk from Marienplatz, for a cornucopia of fresh and prepared foods, wine, chocolate, etc.;
6) Down the street from Dallmayr is another interesting store - Manufacutum. It's sort of a hardware shop but it also has fresh bread and coffee and appliances - interesting place.
7) The Viktualienmarkt, also a short walk from Marienplatz - is an interesting outdoor market and beer garden.
8) Be sure to include a tip if you are served by a waiter or waitress in the beer garden. We were confused about inclusion of service in the bill and asked our grumpy waiter. He was no less grumpy even after we left a generous tip;
9) It is a total tourist move, but do consider going for a beer at the Hofbrauhaus. Take any open seat. The band is loud so forget trying to make a new friend if you eat inside. The food is actually not bad. Amusing experience.
10) If you find yourself near the airport and in need of a meal, we had great food at an Italian restaurant near the airport - Il Casale.
11) If you want to turn in your rental car at the airport yet still get into town, it is simple. The train in the airport will take you into the city; you can get a "family" ticket that is good for the day and cheaper than driving and parking.

an extra day's rental plus the overnight parking charges are probably more than the S-Bahn fare to the airport, and with the S-Bahn one does not have to worry about potential traffic tie-ups.

Plus there always could be an extra dropoff charge at airports for auto returns?
Agreed get rid of car even before heading to Munich - say in Garmisch or some other town you may be in and take the train into Munich though Munich's traffic ain't as bad as many cities thanks to WW2 which decimated the town center and wide new streets have been built.

Depending on what you like to do Munich has a lot to offer from 3 big art museums, the Deutshes museum (science), lots of concerts, beerhalls, Nymphenburg Palace with its great carriage house, the Residence, tours of places of interest of the Nazi days, BMW factory tour and BMW museum, Englisher Garten, the Viktualien Markt (like a farmers market), lots of shopping, etc. click on the Munich guide on this Fodor's website.
Munich has a great public transportation system that is easy to navigate. You can take the s-bahn from the airport to your hotel and out to Dachau.
You don't want a car while you are in Munich because of heavy traffic and expensive parking. Also, if you rent a car at an airport or train statin in Germany they slap on an extra 19% fee. Pick up your car at a downtown lot (even if you have to take a taxi there) on you way out of tow and drop it off as soon as you get back.
On the castle loop you can drive to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau then drive to the Wiesekirche, Oberammergau and Schlos Linderhof and the Ettal Monastary. Then you can go to Garmish and Mittenwald (the violin makers village) before going back to Munich,
