we are planning to fly to amsterdam to see friends for a day or two, then travel to rome and venice, possibly returning to amsterdam to fly home. What is the best way to travel between these cities -- train or fly?

Because of the long distances for the cities you mention, I would fly. Can't you book an open jaw plane ticket (into Amsterdam and out of Rome) to avoid returning all the way to A'dam?

Does KLM fly out of your city?

KLM flights from the US to Rome stop in Amsterdam and you can get a free stopover in Amsterdam both coming and going to Rome.

Hi Familiar and helpful Fodorites...I am having trouble with my Amsterdam to Venice connection. The only cheap airline that I found (Translavia, or something like that..) doesn't fly on the day I need it to, and they fly only to Treviso as it is. I checked the www.etn.com site which features cheap European airlines, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Transavia is fine (I've flown them for MAD-AMS), but if they don't fly on the date you want, that's not much help.

Transavia does have flights to/from Pisa, which is more or less between Rome and Venice. Maybe you can adjust your itinerary a bit.

Also, Virgin Express has some Italian flights from Brussels, which is not so far from Amsterday by train.

Thanks WT, Upon further inspection I did notice that although the Transavia site posted dates well into 2006, when I pulled up May 2006 it went back to March 2006 for the AMS date. So, maybe they just aren't posting that far into the future. I'll cross my fingers.

In a perfect world I could find a cheap flight straight to Venice (Marco Polo?), but we'll see. I don't know any airlines that offer deals on that route.

bardo1 had a good suggestion. Fly Northwest/KLM to Venice with a 2 day stopover in Amsterdam. Then fly home from Rome. Or AMS to Rome, the fly home from Venice.

Does Northwest fly to Amsterdam from your airport? I know KLM flies from AMS to Venice (Marco Polo).

Thanks, but I already have a RT from SFO to CDG on my miles. I am taking a train from Paris to Amsterdam. I am hoping that Transavia will issue it's new schedule by the new year, and many airlines have deals later on. I'll hang in there.

I booked Transavia, Amsterdam-Treviso. It was only $100 for each and that was WAY cheaper than anything , and certainly WAY WAY cheaper than flying to Marco Polo, even with the cost of transportation into Venice, I am sure.

So please, I need guidance from stepping off the plane at Treviso (two of us) and getting to La Calcina in Venice. Thanks!!!!!!!

Treviso is a piece of cake, some prefer it to Marco Polo, no water to contend with...
