I didn't realise that this was still running but it is correct that I have been and gone by now.
We landed in Schipol five minutes early (6.55 p.m.), caught the bus to the Ibis checked in, next bus back to the airport, train into the city, walked down Spuistraat and were in Lucius by 9pm.
It was heaving and they didn't have our reservation which we'd made on-line as they said that their computer had been down. Nevertheless they offered us a table right next to the bar and within five minutes moved us when another table vacated.
I had forgotten how fantastic the Dutch mastery of English is(as Jamie Oliver said in Stockholm-they speak English better than I do!).Professional staff- the only thing I failed to understand was "butterfish" which is unknown to me and I rather suspect has a different name in English. It made not a jot of difference to a great meal. We were both glad we'd made the effort and it added another dimension to our weekend in Istanbul.

Frances,
I am truly curious, and always looking for another good restaurant.
Did you find any particularly Dutch aspects at the Lucius? What did you order? How was it? How much did it cost? How was the service? Ambience?

Any good recs for solo dining in Amsterdam? Or is it like other big cities and not a big deal to have a nice meal by oneself? I do appreciate excellent food and wine (doesn't need to have particularly Dutch aspects</i
but will be on my way home from Rwanda and Kenya so probably won't have much in the way of appropriate clothing.

I'll add to this thread with my own restaurant question:
We'll be in Amsterdam next week for three nights, staying in the Museumkwartier. We'd love recommendations of restaurants in that neighborhood for at least one of our evenings. Our focus in Amsterdam will be the art museums, so much of our time will be spent in the area. Thanks for any help!

I had a day and a half in Amsterdam a few weeks ago and had good (not epicurean-fantastic) meals at:
The Brasserie across from the concert hall. I sat outside and had a salad and fries with two (!) glasses of white wine on a hot afternoon. Very relaxing.

I also had a long, relaxing (seems to be a theme here) dinner outside at Prego. Service is a little scattered but friendly. Food's good, wine list is better. Convenient location on a charming street with lots of little restaurants, probably all touristy and overpriced, but on a June evening when it's light past 10pm, everyone out and about, an opera singer down the block, etc., etc., it was quite pleasant.

I wouldn't call these destination restaurants, just nice places to stop if you're in the area looking for something to eat.
