Amsterdam City Pass

We are undecided if we should use City pass. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Is it worth it? And does it cover public transport? I am thinking of taking hop on hop off bus for 24 hrs

Hop On Hop Off is a rip off and will get you stuck in traffic. It is not public transport. Better use regular public transport, including the brand new Metroline #52.

If you mean Amsterdam City Pass: it doesn't include public transport.

Here's a site comparing the options

Iamsterdam Card is much more expensive, but does include public transport and free entrance to most major museums.
Problem with the Amsterdam City Pass is that you still need to order your museum tickets in advance.

So I guess the Amsterdam card would be the one to go with. But I did already book Van gogh museum for four. We will be there 5 days so I guess the Amsterdam card would be worth it.

I guess it would be. Having free access to so many museums also means you can just pop into one of the lesser known ones. Including a few period canal houses with preserved interiors, like Museum Van Loon and Willet Holthuysen.

CityPass also covers hop-on-hop-off boats which I'd take over a bus version in Amsterdam and get off at majorsites for a day. If menachem says it's a good deal bank on it - he's a local and absolute expert on such things.

If you mean the iAmsterdam City Card: no need to prebook (except van Goghmuseum). Just buy the pass (can even be done in NL when you arrive) and visit the attractions.

Can you pre-book van Gogh without having bought a pass?

Yes, when you book tickets for VGM, just select "iAmsterdam City Card" (under "More options"). After that you only need to fill in some personal information (name, email address, ...) and your booking is complete.
