Amsterdam before the Tulips bloom?
Well, again, I have to take vacations during Spring Break which will be, as I've learned, before the tulips are in bloom. Although that would be a treat to see, would you advise a trip to Amsterdam anyways? Would early spring or summer be best to visit?
I'd love to stay at a well positioned hotel with a view of the canals that would be in the medium price range for a double with bath. Would anyone have suggestions for me in respect to hotels?
Also, suggestions for must see attractions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've been to Amsterdam three times and don't recall ever seeing a tulip outside of a gift shop or flower shop. I think you really need a day trip out of the actual city to appreciate the tulip culture. Try and ship home some Dutch tulip bulbs... I'm not sure if you are supposed to but it's certainly a cool souvenier if you are into Tulips
The Van Gogh museum is fun for a day activity by the way.

Princess..please do not go to A-dam expecting to see tulips in bloom all over the place even when they ARE in bloom..you'll be in for a bitter disappointment.
yes, I would go whether tulips or anything else is in bloom unless THAT is the reason for going and IMO it shouldn't be..you'll soon forget all about the flowers once you arrive in the city.
You might take a look at www.channels.nl for hotel reviews and map positions.

I was there a few years ago in March (I also need to travel during Spring Break - or summer). We happened to have horrid weather - torrential rain and wind for three days. But I believe this is unusual, on the day we left the sun came out and it was beautiful. Weather in any northern European city is a crap shoot - March or any other time. The good news is that I still really enjoyed Amsterdam. There were lots of very good museums and inside things to do. Even the canal boats (for the tours, a must do) are heated with glass roofs.
I highly recommend the Hotel Brouwer (www.hotelbrouwer.nl). Very moderately priced and on a canal. I have photos of the hotel and the view from my room at: www.pbase.com/annforcier/amsterdam
