We always take Ambien on overseas flights. The first time we took melatonin, and it didn't work at all. Since then we do the ambien, and never feel tired the next day. Also take them for the next couple of nights, just to really get adjusted. Rarely take them at home, but are great for traveling.
I have wine w/ dinner and then take...have always awakened-lol. The last post gets my vote for most sensible so far.

Personally I prefer Valium which is an anti-anxiety rather than a sleep-inducer but works great on flights and to get to sleep at night once you arrive. And yes a couple glasses of wine goes along nicely. I still don't actually sleep but makes for a *much* more pleasant flight.

Ambien, Sonata, Valium and Xanax are all prescription drugs and potentially addictive with longterm use. And yes your doctor *will* prescribe them for flights. If he won't I'd see a different doctor.

I cannot take over the counter meds like Tylenol PM, whatever is the active drug in them winds me up something terrible. Talk about anxiety!
