Amalfi questions, comments
Due to a minor itinerary change, I think I might have 6 days to visit the Amalifi coast instead of 5. I'm wondering if my wife and I should spend it in two different locations. Originally, we were going to base ourselves in Sorrento for travel conveniences, but with the extra day we're wondering if we should possibly break this up into two different locations.

These are a MUST see....
Pompei
Positano
Capri
Ravello - my wife really wants to see the chamber music
Amalfi
Praiano ???

I'm thinking 4 days in Sorrento with trips to Pompei, Herculaneum, and Capri (maybe 2 days).

Stay in Ravello for 2 nights and visit Positano, Praiano, and Salerno.

Comments and suggestions appreciated. Is 6 nights to long for the Amalfi? FYI, we travel light with only backpacks and will probably not opt for a car and rely on public transportation. Hotel suggestions in the $100 - $150 range would be great too.

Thanks

When in Italy, we usually try to pace ourselves by alternating days between lots of walking and relaxing/shopping days. In order to do that, you would need one base.

However, your idea to break up the stay is a good one because Amalfi/Positano is so lovely it is certainly worth staying overnight to soak up the atmosphere.

I would start by staying in Sorrento and visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum during the days and returning to Sorrento in the evenings for dinner and resting. And Capri will take up an entire day.

Then I would base the other days in Positano to enjoy the change of pace and leisurely see Amalfi, Praino and Ravello.

Have a great time.
We visited the Amalfi caost in June. WE loved it !!! Our original plan was to spend 3 nights in Ravello and 2 nights in Sorrento.
Ravello was stunning, quite hard to get to, and very quiet (not much to do), but the views were spectacular.
We ended up ditching Sorrento, because we found it too touristy. (In my opinon the smaller towns in the Amalfi caost are far more charming than Sorrento). We stayed on Capri for 2 days instead. I agree however that Sorrento is a better base for visiting Pompei etc. However you cannot really do justice to Capri on a day trip. Also in June it was oppressively hot, and we actually found sightseeing almost impossible.
