Amalfi hiking home base?
Thanks to everyone who weighed in on my question about Naples/Pompeii; based on your advice, we're going to go straight to Sorrento for two nights to see Pompeii and get rid of our jet lag. Now I have a question about our base in Amalfi.
To recap, my husband and I are planning to be there in late June are renting an apartment for 1 week. We're fit 30- somethings who prefer walking over all other transit options. We aren't going to rent a car, but are happy to use buses and ferries as needed. Our main aim is to hike the trails, explore the towns, enjoy lots of local food and wine, and relax.
The most important things to us are walking access to food stores (to stock the apt) and restaurants in the evening, and transit access to the trails we'd like to hike. I'd rather not be in the most touristy/crowded place, but recognize that those are often the places with the best transit connections and walking access, and we need to strike a balance.
The apartment agencies we're considering tend to have properties in or very close to Ravello, Amalfi, and Positano. Which should we choose? I know there's been a lot of debate on these boards about the best base, but it seems that many folks are figuring in trips to Capri and Pompeii and spending just a few days. We'll be done with Pompeii and will have 7 nights.
If you have specific knowledge of small towns just outside the big ones--Atrani or Praiano or others--feel free to add that to the discussion, too.
Many, many thanks!
Melissa

You might want to look at this Web site about hiking on the Amalfi Coast:

Amalfi or Atrani would be good choices with bus and boat connections from Amalfi to Ravello,Minori,Maiori,Positano and Sorrento and Capri. The Sunflower hiking guide to Sorrento.Amalfi.Capri is extremely useful.Plan on spending a day hiking on Capri

We just stayed in Atrani, which is very close to amalfi. I found our apartment on BBplanet.it They had everything in the town unless you try and shop between about 12 noon and 5pm. Atrani is not as touristy as Amalfi. I would definitey pick there again.
