I am trying to plan Amalfi cost activities. Please help.

Is it possible to visit Ravello and Positano on the same day if we are staying in Sorrento? For example, is it feasible to take the Sorrento-Amalfi bus in the morning, change to the Ravello bus in Amalfi, spend a few hours in Ravello, including lunch, then go to Positano via Amalfi, spend the afternoon there and get back to Sorrento at the end of the day (there is a bus after 8 pm from Amalfi to Positano). Is there an easier way?

What is the shortest way to get to Paestum from Sorrento? Is there any direct transporation or we have to go to Salerno, first?

If you want to go by train, I believe that you have to go to Pompeii or Naples first.

You could also take the ferry to Salerno and the train from there. It's about 3 blks from the ferry dock to the train station.

Or you could of course take the thrilling Amalfi Coast buses Sorrento-Salerno - cheaper, more awesome experience but longer. Paestum has a train station just south of Salerno but with sporadic service so buses Salerno-Paestum may be better.

I think the quickest way would be Ira's suggestion of going to Pompeii from Sorrento by CircumVesuviana train and then transferring stations to the in-town Pompeii Trenitalia station which has direct trains to Salerno and possibly even Paestum. Ira's given you the site to check on schedules.

You could easily see both sights as they are located in close proximity of one another. On a tour, I had lunch in Positano, did some shopping, then had gelato in Almafi (the town) and concluded with a visit to Ravello to see the church and visit Palazzo Sasso.

We will be staying in Sorrento and are thinking about touring the AC, having dinner in Positano and getting back to Sorrento. According to the timetables that I found on Internet, the last bus to Sorrento leaves Positano at 8:45 pm, and ferries stop their service even earlier. Since most of the restaurants start serving dinner at 7:30 pm, we may not be able to make it to the bus. I guess, the alternative is to arrange for a taxi. Does anyone know how much this would cost or if there is any other means of transportation that we could use late in the evening.

The advice is greatly appreciated!

this is great! According to our plans, we will be touring AC on 6/19. I guess, if schedules change, they should become more frequent, since it's the beginning of the high season.
In any case, we should be able to rely on the bus.

Catch the bus in Sorrento. Sit on right side for best views. If you are videoing ride (yes its is a ride, with cars passing on blind turns) try and get the front seat. Buses leave every 20 minutes from Sorrento train station. In an hour you will reach Positano. Get off at second Positano stop heading south. That is closest to town. Bus drivers will always direct you when to get off. After seeing Positano head 1 hour south to Amalfi where you pick up another bus that takes you 20 minutes up hill thru beautiful vineyards to Ravello. Tour both villas in Ravello (Rufolo and Cimbrone). Then head back to Sorrento. You might consider bus from Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi one way and boat part of the other way. Boats leave from Amalfi, Positano to Sorrento and back. Boats are dependent on weather and not as frequent as buses. You can check with Sorrento tourist office for times of boats and buses. For a good restaurant in Sorrento try La Antica Trattoria, very charming inside, great service and food. Fix price.

Word of caution on ferries in Positano. They can be cancelled on a whim, siting "weather conditions" when there is not a cloud in the sky. Buses are much more reliable.

This is a great thread, and I have to ask more on it since we want to the same thing in early Jan. (2-5). I've heard that many things will be closed then, but this is the only time we can go because of work. Will the trains/buses have about the same schedules ? Is there enough open to make this worthwhile ?

Hi Diana - People go to the Amalfi Coast for it's stunning coastline - so really you can enjoy that just as much in January as June, weather permitting ...

A few hotels remain open in winter, so you should find somewhere without too much of a problem.

Sites like Pompeii, Ercolano, Paestum etc. are open year round, and ferries to Capri run from Sorrento year round too.

Coastal buses run on a reduced schedule - but will be uncrowded. Train schedules don't vary much between winter and summer, so no problem there.

A lot of people recommend the boat ride around Capri. I read a couple of negative reviews about a company called Laser Capri. Can anyone recommend a boat operator? Also, is it worth doing this tour if you are on a day trip, considering how much time it takes? Thanks.

We hired a boat and sailed part-way around Capri. It took all morning and we had a wonderful time.

We didn't arrange it ahead of time, just hired a nice gentleman on the spot.

The SITA bus schedules are more or less the same the whole year round and as Steve says there is more room in the off season
