Amalfi Coast --- Rome -> Positano -> Capri OR Rome -> Capri -> Positano
Going to Rome on 8/27
Should we go to capri or positano first?
What is the best way to get from Rome to those places? And best way to get back?
Is it better to be in Capri or Positano over the weekend?
We can do Positano 8/27 - 8/30 (sat, sun, mon), Capri 8/30-9/2(Tues, Wed, Thurs), Rome (Fri, Sat).
Or We can do Capri 8/27 - 8/30 (sat, sun, mon), Postiano 8/30-9/2(Tues, Wed, Thurs), Rome (Fri, Sat).
Which way makes more sense? Any other info is helpful - Thanks!!!!

I just did this exact trip and got back a week ago. I thought our itinerary worked really well:
-Arrived in Rome in the morning, had a driver pick us up at the airport and drive us straight to Positano
-3 nights in Positano
-Took the morning high speed ferry from Positano to Capri
-2 nights in Capri
-Took the high speed ferry from Capri to Naples, taxi to Naples train station and then high speed train to Rome
-3 nights in Rome
-Fly back out of Rome
It was an amazing trip and I thought it was timed perfectly and very easy to move from place to place. I don't think it matters where you are during the weekend, as that time will be peak vacation time in those areas anyway. Good luck with the planning!

Time vs. money ..... as outlined by above poster, getting from Rome's airport down to Positano by a driver is most direct AND most expensive. Another option for this portion of your travels, would be to take train from Rome down to Naples, and then have driver take you onward to Positano ..... this may take a bit longer than above as you'd have to get from airport into Rome's city center (Termini train station), and then get high speed train to Naples.
And to further lower transport costs (if needed), from Naples, can take Circumvesuviana (local train) from Naples to Sorrento, and then SITA bus to Positano ..... of course, this option does take longer and has an increased "schlep factor".

@IRA - we have 8 nights in total.
@betts23 - Can you share the Driver Information, cost, etc?
Also Where did you stay in Postiano, Capri and Rome? Any other recommendations? Restaurants, Beach Clubs, etc?
I have for now book Buca Di Bacco in Positano, but am open to suggestions.
@JBX - Thanks for the info. Time Vs Money is always a debate. Maybe we save one way and pay for the other.

We had the BEST driver! His name is Giovanni Lerusce and his email is: [email protected]. 400 euros for a transfer from Rome to Positano in a nice Mercedes station wagon.
Hotels:
Positano- we stayed at Covo dei Saraceni in a standard room with balcony. HIGHLY recommend! The perfect position right on the beach, amazing views, literally next to the dock for the ferry which we used to get to Amalfi and Capri. It had a wonderful rooftop pool overlooking the beach. We absolutely loved this hotel...you should definitely consider it. Breakfast was delicious.
Capri- stayed at Hotel Flora (part of the Morgan hotels on Capri). Great location just a short walk from the main square and nice hotel. They gave us a double upgrade to a junior suite that was complimentary. Incredible views, nice pool area.
Rome- Daphne Inn Veneto. We got one of the bigger deluxe rooms (mid-level category I think). Much more contemporary hotel in Rome than the standard "Renaissance" type decor theme. Was just off Piazza Barberini which was a good location and right by the Metro stop. However, would probably have wanted to be closer to Piazza Navona or Campo de Fiori. Room included Mac laptop which was useful. Concierge could not have been more helpful: mapped out walks, booked restaurant reservations, etc. Not a traditional full service hotel though; it is part of an apartment building.

Forgot to add other tips/reviews you asked for...
Restaurants in Positano:
-Next2: absolutely delicious. About a 15 minute walk up the hill higher into town. Very fresh food (some from their own garden) with a bit of a contemporary twist. Definitely recommend.
-La Sponda at Le Sirenuse: total splurge spot. Food was amazing. View was unreal. Make sure you get an outside seat overlooking the water. Also a fun spot to visit the champagne/oyster bar for a drink if you don't want to spend as much for dinner.
-La Cambusa: down on the beach. Casual outdoor spot. Delicious fresh seafood.
Restaurants in Capri:
-Villa Brunella: had a great meal here. Incredible views!! Make sure you get a seat by the window overlooking the water.
-Lemon Trees Restaurant: not really worth the hike to get there in my opinion. I know others like it, but not my favorite.
Restaurants in Rome:
-Trattoria de Monti: favorite restaurant in Rome!!! A bit out of the way, but food was SO good, reasonably priced. Nicest brothers who run the restaurant. Check out the review on NY Times.
-Sora Lella: on the little island on the Tiber right by Trastevere. Great Trattoria food. Fun to get a drink in Trastevere and then walk to the restaurant.
-Alfredo Restaurant: known for inventing fettucini Alfredo. Not my favorite meal, wouldn't necessarily recommend.
-Cul de Sac Wine Bar: perfect spot for lunch or aperitif right by Piazza Navona. One of the best lunches we had on the trip. You can also order half glasses of wine so you can try a view. Great outdoor seating.
Hilight of the trip:
-Renting our own boat (no skipper) for a full day to tour around Capri, anchor and swim, snorkle, etc. See another post under my name that I wrote about it. Booked through Capri Time Tours/Boats.
Hope this helps!
