Amalfi Coast

Spending 8-9 days on Amalfi Coast May 2006 and wondering which location, Sorrento or Capri would best serve as our "base of operations" to visit the numerous towns and villages along the coast. Thanks.

In my opinion, neither.

Sorrento is a good location if you want to go to Pompeii, Herculaneum or Naples, but I find it the least attractive town on the Amalfi Coast.

Spending your entire time on Capri would involve taking a ferry to the mainland almost every day. But you should spend at least one, perhaps two nights on Capri to enjoy it after the day trippers have gone.

On the mainland, Positano is generally considered the most attractive town; Praiano is smaller and probably a little less crowded.

Unless you want to drive (I wouldn't), the SITA bus that goes up and down the coast will take you to all the towns and villages. Amalfi and Ravello (change busses in Amalfi) are well worth visiting.

Touring from Capri is quite difficult - unless you're going to hire a private boat - since the ferries hours of operation are quite limited (don;t run after 6 pm or so depending on the direction).

Would reco spending a couple days/nights on Capri and the rest in Sorrento - which has good bus, train and ferry service to see the AC towns and other sights in the area.

Hi S,

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Le Sirene in Praiano.

www.lesirene.com.

I also suggest that you do an overnight in Capri, but not make it your base.

You might find the AC part of my trip report helpful.

I did not like Sorrento at all. I would choose Positano. It's beautiful!

Neither Capri nor Sorrento is actually on the Amalfi Coast. And Sorrento is package tour central for the Naples to Amalfi Coast region.

Of the two, Capri is a nicer place to stay if you get away from the tourist area, but Sorrento is the more convenient for traveling in the area.
