How many nights, how far are coming from to go there. Other places on the Amalfi coast as well?
One or two nights only and you mainly want to relax -- I vote for Capri. Three nights or longer and you want to explore the area -- I vote for Positano. Five nights or longer -- Positano with a night or two on Capri.

we're going to be in positano for 4 nights--i have a room at the BW Pasitea, but am feeling a little indecisive about positano. apart from the Le sireneuse, I am a little unsure about the positano hotels

I had an apartment next to the Pasitea and it looks like a nice hotel but it is not on the luxury level of Le S. I see no reason not to stay at the Pasitea for the price.

It's less convenient to see the AC from Capri than from Positano.
