We will be driving through Germany from Hamburg down to the Black Forest, with a curve into the Colmar/Strasbourg area. Can anyone suggest any small towns or cities tha we should not miss out on? Not so much worried about time as finding the perfect spots. Also any sights, restaurants, etc.

We are also interested in any wineries that you may know of that might also serve dinner or have a hotel attached.

riquewihr is one of the prettiest wine villages on the Route des Vins Alscae or Alsace Wine Road - a good part is just north of Colmar, a sweet regional town - don't miss a scale model of the Statue of Liberty at the town's entrance (one of them anyway) -- the original was executed here and shipped to New Jersey in bits when finished. Other villages near Riquewihr are neat too - just meander thru them - wineries dot the road but keep in mind France has a zero tolerance now with driving with alcohol and there are roadside mandatory checks!

You can walk to Riquewihr and Kaysersberg.

We love love love the Alsace region. We stayed in Obernai and thought it was a great location for our five days. We concentrated our visited mostly in the region between Colmar and Strasbourg.

We drove the Route des Vins d'Alsace. It is a lovely drive. Rolling hills covered in grape vines. We would pop in to the little wineries along the way.

We also enjoyed our day spent at Haut-Koenigsbourg (castle). It was a foggy day so made it even more special/eerie. Had a wonderful lunch at their restaurant.

Basically any town you visit will be lovely. We especially loved Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Obernai. Colmar and Starsbourg, though larger, are a great place to visit also.

The half-timbered buildings are painted lovely pastel shades. There are unique little shops in each town. Pretzels hanging in the shop windows. Flower boxes overflow with gorgeous blooms. Such a lovely part of France.

My favorite small town is Obernai, which is extremely convenient for going up to Mont Sainte Odile and its fantastic view, and it is also only 30km from Strasbourg.

Don't miss Hunawihr, quiet but gorgeous. Bergheim was busier, and pretty like Riquewihr but not as crowded.

Colmar is lovely, a bustling touristed section plus gorgeous quiet back streets.

The flowerboxes and painted houses in these towns are so pretty.
