We have always taken the full insurance package in Europe (usually with AutoEurope) until this year for a week rental in the UK, when we opted out to use the Visa coverage which we carefully checked out in advance. Oddly enough this was at the suggestion of the phone rep from AutoEurope asking why we were doing the full insurance, didn't we have a credit card that would cover.

To make a long story short, we totalled the car in Wales in May. One of these days if we ever get it all straightened out I'll post the full report. Meanwhile we're still up to our ears in paper work and back and forth battles regarding getting an accident report from the Welsh police and an "itemized" repair estimate from Avis, even though the car was totalled, and they did provide a general estimate showing parts and labor far exceeded the value of the car. It would be nice not to have about a $6000 charge hanging over our heads on this!

Meanwhile, rest assured I will NEVER rent in Europe again without taking their full insurance!!

Wow, Patrick, hope you all weren't hurt in the accident! Please report back when it all gets straightened out. This topic gets debated frequently. I've always felt like I was flushing my cash when I pay the Super CDW but 5 times out of 7 always do pay it for the peace of mind.

I think insurance is absolutely necessary for some things--but it depends on the degree of risk and the downside of not buying insurance. Health insurance--absolutely. Car insurance--it's the law, besides being a necessity. Home owners insurance--only a fool doesn't have it.

But to pay $160 to possibly save a few hundred? To have a $100 deductable on collision insurance (unless you are a horrible driver)? These have no logical financial justification.
