Definitely Bologna. I found Ferrara disappointing. We stayed at the B&B Miramonte, which I would recommend. The owner speaks English fluently.

Don't overlook Modena. You can stay
at The Canal Grande Hotel, park out front if you are driving and walk to dinner. If you're only going to have one night Modena is much easier to learn your way around than Bologna ( don't get me wrong, we love Bologna and try to go there every trip). Both towns are well known for wonderful food. Parma is also an option. Check to see if there is a convention going on when you're planning for Bologna , reservations are tight and some require a week long stay. Whatever your decision, have your hotel make your dinner reservations for you.

Bacione, it is true about conventions in Bologna tying up most of the hotel rooms. My DH and I were never able to get hotel reservations.
I have stayed nights in Ferrara with Italian friends and had a wonderful time, probably because one was born and raised in Ferrara so I had the blessing of being with a native.
Having said that I have only had day trips in Bologna. I love that city and still hope to spend a few nights there.
Newt has some good thoughts too. The only thing is that Parma and Modena are northwest and that will take you out of your way since you are traveling from Florence to Venice. That may or maynot be a problem depending on how much travel time you have.
And one other thought is Padua (Padova in Italian). Another beautiful city and so easy to be in. You can put that into the search box and read threads to give you an idea if it might appeal to you. Another place I love as most people do. Padua is on your way to Venice which is a plus also.
You have lots of wonderful choices. Sounds like a beautiful trip.
