Airfare to Italy- what do you think?
My husband & I are looking to go to Italy from Newark, late August or early September & the fares are sky high right now, between $1100 & $1300. We are going to hold out & see how low the rates go or maybe possibly use our One Pass miles. How low do you think the fares are likely to go?

Just asking...

Do hold on a bit longer. We went to Italy 2 times in Sept. The first time we paid $748.00 and last year we paid $787.00.
We are going to Spain in Sept and I am waiting for anything under $800.00. From past experience that should be in May or June....

I searched & searched about 3 months before my late August trip flying into Athens and out of Venice, the lowest I was able to get out of JFK was $1100. The only way to bring it lower probably would be to fly into London, and then book with one of the many economy airlines that fly from London to Italy. I can't speak to the Sept rates though, they may come down. The best time would probably be to purchase in late May early June (3 months before).

I had the same experience last year for June trip to Italy. After the first of the year, the fares were all around $1,000 USD PP. I kept checking Orbitz and other sites daily until I caught a sale by American Airlines and got the tickets for just under $600 each. The sale only lasted 2 days and then the fares went right back up. You have to be able to act quickly when you see something, it's worse than gambling on mortgage interest rates.

I think you should wait a while for August. Probably nothing but full fare right now, unless you want to fly before April 2003.

Did you try www.tiss.com. We could get tickets for April around $700 from Denver. From Newark your fares should be more reasonable. M.

TISS is now www.flights.com, but the old link should work, too.
