Wait a bit. The winter sales will come along sometime this autumn. If you have flexibility, try to travel past the end of the Christmas/New Years period, for what might well be the cheapest fares of the year. Right now PL will only have access to inventory that is priced at summer/autumn levels; once the winter fares come out you'll be able to use PL to get cheap seats with those rates as the base. Go into the bidding archives at biddingfortravel.com to see how prices fluctuate over the year.

You can learn a lot about sources of info on lower cost airfares by visiting the cheap flights forum of www.euroflight.com
And there is no better "walking encyclopedia" of how to get cheap airfares than Don, the moderator there.
Best wishes,
Rex

Where are you flying from to Italy? I have been searching for cheap airfares for January, and I found what I think is the cheapest out there on www.1800flyeurope.com. I am looking at fares of $444, including taxes for January from Chicago. Check out the site. Those fares are available for booking now and who knows what you can get from Priceline in the future.
