We had to check our carry-ons and just took on our totebag/purse. No big deal.

Fortunately, my carry-on is 10 lbs. FULL (as in, with all my things packed in it). Wow, I can't imagine a 10 lb. carry-on by itself! But yes, I would imagine that if your carry-on is 10 lbs. on its own, that means you only have 3 lbs. leeway. Good luck!
