I just noticed that Aegean is offering great prices on tickets to the Greek Islands. For example, the normal fare quoted ONE WAY from Crete to Santorini via Athens is 121 Euro including tax. Right now the fare quoted for May for this same flight _YOU MUST BOOK EACH LEG SEPARATELY_ is 92 Euro total. Athens/Santorini, Athens/Crete, Athens/Kos or Athens/Rhodes is 46 Euro including tax (each way). I also plugged in dates for June and July with the same results. Some days are already booked solid during the High Season, so if you want to take advantage of these great low prices DO IT NOW!!! Good Luck and Happy Travels.

Thanks for the tip...am currently planning a trip (our second!) to Greece this fall.

Generally, do you recommend booking a roundtrip between the US and Athens and then booking island flights separately? I've done a little research and it appears as booking this way might save a bit of money (without the airfare sale).

Last year I didn't book my flights until the new spring/summer Aegean schedule came out so I wouldn't have to worry about changes - particularly a drastic one like the people who got changed from a 11AM flight to a 5AM. I'll certainly have to give this some consideration and maybe try to figure out exactly when I want to fly right away. Wonder how long I've got? Have to get a couple of questions answered first.

I checked and saw that I can get a flight from Athens to Heraklion for EUR 19.

However, I will be flying into Athens from London on Olympic. I need to make a same day connection to Heraklion - am I correct in assuming that if my ATH-HER leg is on Aegean, I will have to claim and re-check my bags in Athens?

If that's the case, I'm not sure (for me) if it's worth the savings I'll get with the cheaper flight.

beanweb, I think booking your island flights separately is a good idea because your travel agent or internet booking service might not have these extra-low fares at their disposal. Actually, you can do a price comparison to see which gives you the better fare. Just do it as quickly as you can.

chepar-Yes, definitely you'll need to claim and recheck your bags, Olympic is very lax in their baggage retrieval/transfer services, and if it's going onto a rival airlines, who knows what might happen? "Lost"??????? Yeah, right! Last year there was a posting about Olympic 'forgetting' to load ALL the baggage for a flight from Athens to Crete.

Thanks... We don't have our tix for US to Athens yet, but I'm thinking about purchasing the island flights anyways. Very hard to resist 19Euros each way between Crete and Athens on the days we were already planning. Thanks again for the info!

For those of you travelling from Athens to Rome or Milan (or in the other direction), Aegean also has cheap airfares for these flights.

I'm not real thrilled about the prospect of flying Olympic (besides the fact that their fares are quite expensive in comparison to other carriers I've looked at), but they offer a direct flight from London to Athens. They also offer a direct flight from Athens to Paris (where I'm headed after Greece).

While I might be willing to deal with the hassle of switching airlines to save some money, I don't think my parents (who are traveling with me) are up to that.

I'll just be crossing my fingers that my luggage makes it to Crete with me!

Brotherlee, call me myopic, but I can't see The Sale on the Aegean website. Is it just obvious when you look at prices?? ie my flight Corfu-Hania at 94 euros (but with a change in Athens I notice). Unfortunately, due to the vagaries of my family and other animals, I can't commit to a booking yet!

Gertie, the 'sale' isn't advertised, I just noticed it by plugging in departure dates, and you have to plug in each leg of the journey separately to buy the cheaper tickets.

Oh yes I get it now. The CFU-ATH flight is 37 euros but the ATH-CHQ is 19. Wow. Wonder how long for??

Hard to tell. Don't forget that there are airport taxes added to the published fares, usually somewhere between 25-30 euros per leg.

Thanks for the tip on the seat sale. We have never been to Greece before but are planning a trip for middle of October 2006. We are landing in Athens then heading to Crete for 4 or 5 days, Santorini for possibly 3 days and then Mykonos for 3 and then to Athens for a couple of days before flying home. I think I will book the Athens to Crete now but would it be better to take the ferries between the other Islands or fly especially with this seat sale. I know the ferries are hard to figure out in the Fall so thinking this might be a better option or will we waste alot of time in airports. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, it's possible to have both a sunset and caldera view, from the Esperas and Oia Mare Hotels, but the caldera view will be partially blocked and the rooms at these hotels are much more than 100 Euro.

Carley-The ferry can take up to 5 hours and at that time of year it isn't a daily occurrence. It takes approximately 3-4 hours depending on which flight from Chania to Santorini you book, and 2.5-3.5 hours from Heraklion. You won't waste time by flying. Just be sure to book each leg separately to get the bet price.

Thanks so much for the information. I guess we will have to finalize our plans now so that we can get these fares. Do you think we should act on it now or will there maybe be another sale later in the year. Who knows I guess.
