Advice needed on getting taxi's

Can you tell me the best method for getting Taxi's at Rome Termini and Naples Train Station? Is there a certain direction when leaving the stations ? Besides confirming distance and cost, any other tips?

Thank you!

For Rome, go to the long taxi queue out front on the plaza. Wait your turn and get in an official cab only, one with Rome's SPQR seal on the door. If you have a print of the Googlemap for Termini to your destination, with the street address, that would not hurt. Buon viaggio.

All RR stations have taxi lines. You can't confirm the price since the taxis use the meter - and that's what you pay (plus extras for luggage, etc). Agree to know exactly where you want to go and about what the distance/cost will be. If you are unsure of pronunciation have the name of the hotel or address written down.

Just be sure you take an official taxi in each place.

Thank you both. Especially about official taxi's. Also a good idead to have the information written down. From hotel emails, I have what they said the fare should be.

You can confirm the price, in fact, that what is required in Naples if you want the set fees instead of meter rate. Taxis in Naples have set fees (official taxis), but you must ask for the set fee before the taxi takes off. If you don't ask, they don't have to give it to you and can use the meter. They are supposed to give you a receipt (before the taxi takes off) with the taxi number. On this link, scroll down and click visualizza le tariffe to d/l the pdf. Page 3 is English. The set rates are on the right side. Page 4 is a map of Naples by zones.

Another link that explains a little more about the set rates in English.

Here's a photo of the taxi rank at Napoli Centrale, to the left as you walk out of the main doors...

... and the new version of the city's official rates, which you should see on display in the cab:

To be charged under the "Fixed Tariff" - on journeys for which one has been set - you must request that BEFORE the meter is started.... however, since those include a weighting to average out such extras as up to 4 passengers, traffic delays and luggage charges, they're not automatically cheaper than paying what the meter would show.

Indeed they can appear quite expensive with only one passenger at times when the roads are empty... although you'd not want to foot the bill for a 30 minute holdup!

On the other hand, they were set a number of years ago - and the drivers feel they should be higher by now - so, with a few, you'll perhaps have to haggle.

From long experience here, we've found it can help to wave around a print of that tariff page, and use the phrase "Tariffe Predeterminate"... but don't start a dingdong with your driver in front of the others, as they'll rarely back down in the presence of such an audience - unless, perhaps, you're their Neapolitan granny!

..............................

At Termini in Rome, the rank is at the extreme left end of the canopy at the front of the station. There too the taxis are all white, and you can maybe just see a few in the photo here?
