John gave me good advice but it was not how we found the reality. It was very easy to get both Keukenhof and Floriade tickets at the VVV, at train stations and on-site. If I had a choice between the two I'd see Keukenhof, the Floriade was not as spectacular, but as it lasts the whole summer I could see how it would be lovely later in the season.
Dana,
I haven't looked at this thread since I posted so I'm sorry that I didn't respond to your follow-ups. It's good that everything worked out for you. My experience at the Amsterdam VVV is a confusion of windows and people. When I go in there I usually turn around and walk right out. It is beginning to look like a commercial operation; it was a public service in the old days.
When I have gone to Keukenhof I would just go -- bus, train, or bike -- and buy a ticket at the gate; you don't need a reservation. It is a beautiful place, isn't it?
As for Floriade I have yet to go but am not anxious after seeing the comments on this site. Floriade seems to be a master work of Dutch marketing. The Dutch are very good at self promotion.
www.enjoy-europe.com
Just back from Holland & visits to both Keukenhof & Floriade. No problem with lines & tickets for either...just go. The only long line I saw was at the Amsterdam Centraal station VVV office; a good place to avoid. Keukenhof was great & Floriade a big disappointment.

We got back from amsterdam recently , and we went to Keukenhof and Floriade. Both were lovely.
Floriade reminded us of a World's Fair for flowers. There were pavillions or exhibits from 26 countries with flowers and souvenirs from each country.
There was a large green house filled with lovely flower exhibits at both gardens which was very welcome because on the days we went, it was pretty cold outside.
If I could just go to one, I would choose Keukenhof because it was acres and acres of beautiful tulips and other spring flowers. However, Floriade was very pretty, too, and I am sure it will be even prettier as the weather warms up.
