advice for 2 days in Geneva area
I arrive at 6:00 pm on a Wednesday in early March, leaving Saturday AM by train to Zermatt. Any general and specific advice would be welcome, I was thinking maybe Montreux? If so, how do you get there, train? car? ...

Thanks

Domaine de Chateauvieux in Satigny, without a doubt.

My own "iscovery" of this place was in 1996. The NY Times re-discovered it again just about two months ago.

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/17/travel/17TAB.html

As always, registration is required to read this, but it's free.

Best wishes,

Rex
marc,

Montreux is one of my favorite places in Europe, so I clearly think you're making the right move! But if you're not in the mood for a resort city of about 20,000 folks, you can opt to stay in the vineyards of the Lavaux (Lutry, Cully, Chexbres, Rivaz). Vevey is also a good choice for a base.

There are many activities for all levels here. You can take excursions to the mountains of Gstaad or Chateaux d'Oex, to the ancient castle of Gruyeres, to the Roman museum of Nyon, or to the wine museum of Aigle; you can walk the vineyards between Chexbres and Rivaz or you can bicycle the 32 km route in the vineyards between Lutry and Montreux. I have a travel journal with some details & photos here: http://www.igougo.com/planning/journal.asp?JournalID=7825

Montreux is about an hour by train from the Geneva airport, which has a train station in the basement. You can check various fares & schedules at the Swiss rail site, www.rail.ch

s

Bonjour Marc,

If you decide to go to Montreux, take the train directly from the airport. Driving between Geneva and Montreux around that time on a weekday is definitely hell, with half the working population in a hurry to go back home and do some shopping before, and the possibility of rain. It will be already dark at that time, so nothing to see until 7:30 next morning, and shops will be closed by the time you hit downtown Geneva or Montreux.

I second Rex about Chateauvieux, for the food and the fact it is one of the nicest area around Geneva. If the weather is fine, you can have lunch at their annex in Peney-Dessous, just beside the Rhone river, and a nice walk along the Nant-D'Avril creek just above the restaurant.

You can visit the villages of Russin and Dardagny not far and indulge in some wine tasting in one of the local winery (try Ramuz-Caccia in Russin).
