accomodations in Sorrento;good restaurants

My h and I are leaving for Italy on Sept. 8th and are planning to drive from Rome along the Amalfi Coast. Any suggestions for stops on the way to Sorrento? Or restaurants that will give the true flavour of Italy?

I don't know if it still exists, but up on Via del Capo from downtown Sorrento was Ristorante L'Angoletto. I haven't been there in 5 years, but it was some of the best food I've ever had in Italy. It's true Campanian cuisine. Ask for spaghetti aglio e olio -- it's not on the menu -- and the staff will know that you actually know what you're talking about and aren't just Joe Schmoe from off the street.

The restaurant is adjacent to some olive and lemon groves (then, of course, most of Sorrento fits that description), just beyond (100 m) the last stop of the bus route that goes up Via del Capo. The restaurant is in the Sorrento suburb, Capo di Sorrento, just down the street from the Hotel Dania.

Our favorite restaurant in Sorrento from our visit May was Restaurante il Buco. It is located off of Piazza Sant Antonio at Il Rampe Marina Piccola 5. You may need a reservation for dinner.

bobbie,

last year we based ourselves in Sorrento. We had several fantastic dining experiences in Sorrento. Make sure you seek out'ANTICA TRATTORIA
Via P.R. Giuliani 33, Sorrento, Italy
Phone: 081/8071082 and also: The outdoor terrace restaurant in the Grand Victoria Excelsior Hotel. Both of these restaurants were, IMO the best meals we had in Italy.

L'Antica Trattoria is tucked away in Old Sorrento, walking distance from the square, but it was a bit tricky to find.
I second the nomination for L'Antica Trattoria. It is a bit of a search to find (next to Davide Gelatto, though!) but well worth it. I had a steak to die for there. The service was exceptional, and it was our best meal during our week spent south of Naples.

Amy
