Accomodation in the South East??

Hi guys,

I am 20 and I'm going to the United Kingdon by myself (!!!) in January. I am desperately trying to look for accomodation in the South East of England.

Do any of you guys know any good places that are reasonably cheap?

I'm looking for something as close to Chawton/Winchester as possible.

Cheers,

Katie

Fee fi fo fum I smell the bones of a Jane Austen fan.

Your question is quite broad. "reasonably cheap" is a fairly moveable feast definition wise.

Winchester is my home town (and that of another regular poster) so my knowledge of hotels extends as far as their bars.

There are a fair few hotels in the city, but none are dirt cheap.

THis is the official tourist boards website which should give you an idea:

http://www.visitwinchester.co.uk/site/where-to-stay

Winchester's lovely - you'll love it.

need a bit more info from you:

Like your budget? Also are you driving or depending on public transport? That would make a difference whether you'd need to stay in larger towns w/ good rail/bus connections, or in small villages w/o muc public transport.

Is your entire trip Austen/Chawton-centric or are you also going other places?

OH - meant to add, if your trip is "Austen-centric" be sure to check opening times, etc. For instance the house/museum in Chawton is only open on weekends in January.

As for Jane Bloody Austen (it's her full name) in Winchester there is really only her grave to see It's in the Cathedral on the left side as you enter from the West door.

The house she lived in (and died in) is a private house (when I was at school it was the geography master's house) and you can't see in.

I won't tell you what I used to do on her grave as revenge for being made to read those books as a teenage boy.

Having said all that, there is plenty of other great stuff in Winchester.

Are you on holiday, and therefore looking for a B+B-like place?

Or coming to study or live, and therefore looking for a flat or flatshare? If the latter, the University of Winchester (yes, there is such a place) might be a better source than a tourist board.of help

audere -

go and wash your mouth out for failing to revere the name of St. Jane.

I hope that you now repent of your foolish youthful exploits and fully appreciate Jane's great qualities. They talk of nothing else at White Hart Lane at half time.

regards, ann

University of Winchester (yes, there is such a place)>>>>>

Or King Alfred's Teacher Training College as it is still known to us of more advanced years.

Sorry, but your title could have been more helpful. This is a "Europe" board, so "South East" would be somewhere like Greece (or Turkey, if I wanted to ignite the "Is Turkey in Europe" debate).

Yes, I can just see Lydia Bennet among the WAGs, or hanging around the players' car park at least..
