Accommodations near Salzburg

Bob, many hotels in Austria have access to parking and/or parking lots, and I am not entirely certain that there aren't hotels specifically for motorists that have parking similar to what you would find as a motor hotel in the US. However, if you want to stay near a historic center of town or at a more charming hotel, you may have to park your car down the street or at a car park that has an agreement with the hotel. For example we stayed in Salzburg and also had a rental car, but we had to park it a block or so away. It was worth it to stay in the heart of the historic center of town with easy access to places of interest. Expecially since we didn't want to have to keep driving into town and back out of town, (very little town parking in general). But the hotel we stayed at was the Weisse Taub (White Dove) lovely hotel, and parking, just not right out in front.

Bob,

The small village of Grodig, about 4 miles south of Salzburg (on the route to Berchsgarten), has some quaint and reasonably priced lodging. Many of the guesthouses and pension have parking outside the front (or rear) entrances.

On one of our visits to Salzburg, we stayed at the Pension Sallerhof in Grodig. (They have a web site --you can do a search.) It's a lovely Austrian chalet with well-cared for rooms. (Those on the top floor are best.)

The village is quiet and provides easy access to Salzburg city

For day trips into Salzburg, there is free parking at the lot adjacent to the Tourist Information Office on the southern edge of town. From the lot, you can catch a tram to the old town. ( Ten minute ride.)

Hope this is of assistance.

Perhaps I need to make clearer my needs for accomodations in Austria. I am looking for accommodations NEAR Salzburg, not IN Salzburg. If I wanted to go to Salzburg Old Town, I would go back to where I was last year in a microsecond! I wanted to stay NEAR Salzburg so I can explore the surrounding area, and make a trip into the old city itself if I wanted to.
There are quite a few smaller towns around the area like Mondsee and St. Gilgen that are quite charming. Hence my choice of the word "near."
As for the parking, I used the American motel as an analogy. (And I would go to Austria in preferece to Texas.) For example, in Switzerland, we stayed at a hotel in Zinal with free parking at the door for hotel guests. Also the apartment I rented in Lauterbrunnen had free parking whereas the city lot ran several dollars a day. Parking in cities like Paris and Vienna can be expensive, and it is difficult to get in and out.
So, to summarize, what I am looking for is a suggestion for a pleasant place to stay in the vicinity of Salzburg that offers easy car access.

Thanks Georgine. That is the type of info I was seeking. Can you specify a name of a place?
I was hoping to get a specific recommendation from someone who had actually stayed in the place.
Web searches I can do!! Like I have already sent in a deposit on an apartment in the Ötztal west of Innsbruck. I found the apartment on the web.
Last year in Salzburg, we came in by train and stayed in a little hotel on Goldgasse, near Mozart's statue.
So worrying with a car was not part of the trip. This year, I want to drive around by car.

Bob:

I have not stayed at this place, but they send out very nice literature - - www.tcs.co.at/unterkuenfte_e/gruenauerhof - - I actually think there are many nice places to stay "up in them thar hills" - - and as BobTheNav says, St. Gilgen ranks very highly as what you always thought the Austrian Alps would (and should) look like.

See http://www.salzburg.com/tourismus_e/...n/s_index.html for an overview look at this picturesque place.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hi Bob:
As recently as Oct'00 we stayed at Hotel Zum Hirschen in Salzburg. It was one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. It was a beautiful old hotel in downtown Salzburg and part of the Best Western Group. I tried to check it out for you but for some reason it is no longer listed. However, there is another BW hotel within 2 blocks. We had dinner there and thoroughly enjoyed it. They both included free parking. I suggest typing www.bestwestern.com
Then type Austria then Salzburg. The hotel which looked every bit as nice as the Zum Hirschen was the Hotel Stieglbrau. The best part is that you can get instant price and confirmation. Also senior rates if you qualify. It's worth looking into....Paul J

Bob,

I know the Salzburg area fairly well. There are literally thousands of accomodations available, even in the smaller villages. With the exception of some places in the city of Salzburg, most of them will have free parking for their guests. Although I prefer to stay in vacation apartments, I know three Gasthofs from personal experience. All of them have enough parking space.

1. Gasthaus zur Kugelmühle near Marktschellenberg, about halfway between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden on the German side of the border. It is an old marble mill, and you can still see how marble balls for decorative purpose or for use as cannon balls were produced in former times. Very close to the Gasthof are the entrance of the beautiful Almbachklamm gorge and a bus stop with frequent direct connections to Mirabellplatz in Salzburg. Their homepage is

http://www.gasthaus-kugelmuehle.de

It is in German only, but as far as I know you can handle that.

2. Gasthof Fürberg near St. Gilgen at the shore of the Wolfgangsee. Very beautiful location. There is a boat station nearby, and you can take a swim in the lake, if you want.

http://www.fuerberg.at/_frs/en_start.html

3. Gasthof Druckerhof near Unterach am Attersee. The Gasthof is on the slope of a mountain and provides a fine view of the Attersee. However, it is about one hour away from Salzburg. Thus, it is a good base for the Salzkammergut rather than for Salzburg itself. They have rooms and vacation apartments.

http://www.kaunertal.com/1Root/Konti...epage...1.html

Numbers 2 and 3 are accessed by short, but steep and narrow roads. However, there should be no problem under normal road conditions ( i.e., no snow, no ice ). It is definitely easier than driving over a Swiss mountain pass ...

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you further.

Regards, Jochen
