Regarding the suggestion for Hotel Am Markt, yes it is in a great location, but I stayed there last September and would never go back there. We were looking for a room for our last night in Munich as our other hotel was sold out for that night. I booked the Am Markt based on their location and price, but the experience was not good.

To start, the man at the front desk was not friendly at all; a complete opposite of the hosts of the Laimer Hof where we had just been. The room was very small, and the bathroom was the smallest we encountered on our trip. I felt like I was stepping up into a porta-potty with a shower stall in it. I wasn't looking for luxury, but I expected something basic and comfortable. The room just had a creepy, somewhat dirty vibe to it. We had paid a few euro extra to have breakfast included, but when we saw the selection of a couple hard rolls, a big bowl of yogurt and some cereal we decided to go elsewhere. I asked the desk clerk if he would just take the breakfast charge off the room bill and, even though I had a written confirmation from them with both price options, he wouldn't adjust the price. We didn't argue the issue because we just wanted to get out of there.

Maybe we just had a bad experience at an otherwise not so bad place, but from what I observed, there was nothing to ever make me go back. Not even if it was free.

We stayed at the Uhland at Christmas a couple of years ago and one cold afternoon we were freezing in out room. I called the front desk and they told me to look behind the curtains to turn on the radiator. It warmed right up and I felt like an idiot.

Unfortunately I've never stayed in the hotel range you've chosen, but I've been to some of them without staying there as I was checking out some hotels for some friends.

Your final choices (Monaco,Royal,Condor)seem to clump around the train station which is not the nice part of Munich. Of the three I would choose CONDOR based on location as you'll be closer to Karlsplatz and that street is just a bit better than the other two which has more strip joints in the area. Uhland is too far from the oldtown, it's practically just south of the train station area. I think going north is better than south of the station. I believe some Fodorites like Kings hotel & Kings First Class in the north of the station.

Blauer Bock is interesting because it has a nicer interior than its shabby exterior which is the opposite of Uhland's situation which has a charming exterior. If location is most important then Blauer Bock has the best location being close to the Viktualienmarkt at the heart of oldtown, you'll be very close to the Marienplatz/city hall and Maximillianstr area. In the same hotel building, there is a very nice independent restaurant called Blauer Bock unrelated to the hotel.www.restaurant-blauerbock.de/
We enjoyed eating at that restaurant and by accident entered the hotel lobby. I remember that it looked darker than the hotel internet pictures.

Laimerhof is close to the Olympic stadium but far from the nice old town.

Thank you so much. Bauaer Block is too expensive for us, I am afraid, but I will write to them anyway. Have you checked about how big the rooms are at any of these? Looks like Condor's are really small, as is the breakfast room. I'm most probably going with Royal which is non-smoking!

I've increased the price I can pay! So now I am looking at Novotel Munich City, Platzl, Mirabell, and Flemming--others?

Can you tell us what your budget is now? It seems confusing because Platzl is charging 277 eur per room per night. Then you should be able to book Maximilian apartment & hotel for a lot less, and you'll save money if you get the 2 bedroom unit. I think it's the most decent place for a family of 4 where you can be together but have plenty of space to be comfortable. http://www.maximilian-munich.com/

If I were to stay in the train station area then I would pick Le Meridien or Sofitel. In my mind, the smaller hotels are just not worth the poor location no matter how big the rooms are.

actually, Platzl is out of my price range. Maximilian only had rooms for 165E each left--others were already booked. I'm hoping for under 140E each room.

One hotel I can suggest for your last night in Munich on the 29th is the Renaissance in Schwabing. The hotel chain website still has a 640 sq-ft executive suite for 99 euro including buffet breakfast. There is a Lufthansa bus stop across the street from the hotel that will take you to the airport in 25 minutes. You can get a glimpse of the more bohemian student district Schwabing & Englischer Garten (if not too freezing) and hopefully some access to the Olympic village (I don't know how from Schwabing, perhaps email the Renaissance). Though it's very american, you may appreciate having the large suites to spread out and pack your suitcases. Funky bathroom but good size living room with a kitchen, nook, & balconies with no view. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial 4 night stay unless you don't mind taking 10 euro taxi rides to oldtown which is reasonable enough for 4 people. I'm sure S/U bahn costs at least 2 euro something per ride.

sounds interesting. We really have to stay in the same place for the trip so we can leave our luggage. (We're going to Istanbul from 24-29)Are there restaurants close to it?It's two rooms? Can anyone take the Lufthansea bus to the airport?
Do you know anything about the Novotel Munchen City?

I was at the Bristol 3 years ago.
While the general location is good (very close to subways, city center / old town), I found the rooms small and not in a very good nor modern shape.
I would not pay more than € 80-90 for a dbl room, unless they did some renovation since I was there.

it was 99E through HRS web. Did you happen to go in Dec.? COncerned about heat. Also, can't get on the Hotel's website or e-mail them directly-what's up with that??
I think it might have been renovated in 2006.Any other suggestions in that vicinity?

I had a smimilar request for a room for 4 that is reasonably priced in Munich! We are going in June so a/c was a concern.
I booked the marriott for about 150american per night including breakfast. It was cheaper without breakfast. You may want to check prices for the dec. dates. Good luck!
