abisko and kiruna
On 27th Dec. we reached Abisko from narvik by train. We were staying at the abisko mountain lodger for 2 nights. It a nice cosy lodge with good food and common area wherin one can interact with other guests. We visited the aurora sky station that evening but it was very cloudy hence could not see any thing. On a clear day the sight must be spectacular.
Next day we went dog sledding with abisko dog sled.Nice 2 hr tour of the national park.
In the evening went on a photography tour with Chad Blackly of Lights over Lapland. Highly recommend this trip for non photographers too as he makes u feel at home. Did manage to see the lights briefly.
On 29th we took the train to Kiruna and stayed at Camp Ripan. This place is out of the town and the cabins are nice and comfortable. It snowed continuously and sice we had a car we planned to drive to Abisko but the were advised not to do so roads were being closed due to snow storms.
30th-went on a tour of the ice hotel. This was our first experience of this kind and hence very interesting. Dropped the car at the station and boarded the train for Stockholm on or way home.
i thought abisko is an interesting place and would definitely visit for the northern lights.

took that same train out of Narvik to Kiruna and eventually Stockholm..it was in summer and the passing scenery looked quite boring and nondescript..I imagine the time to go is winter from your description..happy it worked out so well for you. Happy travels...
