A couple nights in Riquewihr would be fine: stay at Hot L'Oriel and have dinner at Le Sarment d'Or.
Had a good Alsatian Pinot Gris at Balthazar in NYC last Sunday.

We stayed in Strasbourg in the pedestrian area at the Hotel Rohan--just a little ways up from the Cathedral. It was one of the best trips of our life!! It was also my initiation into Fodor's, which was such a great find for me! We took a day trip to Obernai, which was a lovely small town with the old wall surrounding it. We liked it very much but would have found it a little too small for a base. The fact that you will be traveling w/a toddler makes your situation a little different, but Alsace is a gem. I bet you will love it. The wines and food are superb and unlike any others we have enjoyed on other trips.
