www.mappy.com will plot pedestrian routes between 2 locations and tell you how far and how long.
We do the opposite of BootsN; we eat well at lunch and snack for dinner. Usually lunches are less expensive, and we're ready for a sit down after half a day sightseeing.

This is the neighborhood that I stay in and the supermarket is on rue de Seine at the corner of rue Buci....or between Blvd. St.Germain and rue Buci...as there are 2 entrances. All along rue Buci are food-related shops. Rue Buci is only about 3 short blocks long.
As for restaurants, there's a whole restaurant street...rue Gregoire de Tours, between Blvd. St. Germain and rue Buci. It's one block east of rue de Seine...a 30-second walk from the grocery store. I've stayed in this neighborhood since the early 80s and there is nothing that I would consider "cheap" by American standards no matter what the exchange rate is...super high or super low. It is what it is.
As for the metro, you're also close to Line 10. Happy Travels!

I don't overdo the walking. If I have to go further than a km or two, I hop the next bus going my way.
This saves my precious travel time for savoring a museum I've never visited or just chatting at a bistro.
I lived in Paris one summer as a student, walking back and forth from the XIV to the V every day, so that cured me of any desire for long-range hikes.
Yes, you can walk from Notre Dame to the Arc de Triomphe - you can also walk to Normandy if you've got the time.

Many thanks to all (j_999_9, coxbox, Mimar and Guenmai) for the great cheap eats suggestions!
I'm no longer anxious, just impatient! I cannot wait to go!
Cathies - We will not venture to Versailles, at least not on this trip. We will however be visiting the numerous gardens and fountains throughout Paris. The kids chose Notre Dame over Saint Chappelle and we've opted for the Orsay over Louvre. Obviously I'm going to have to come back another time with MORE time! Thanks for the tips! Regarding crime on the Metro - found info and warnings on both the U.S. Department of State Travel Warnings for U.S. Citizens site and through misc. travel guides.
BKP and Ira - Thanks so much for the ice cream recommendations... The kids will LOVE you for it!
And Robespierre - Thank you for being so honest, but after 20 minutes of sitting in a bistro with 3 kids, I'll be ready to walk to Normandy if I have to. Not really... the kids are great kids, but this visit to Paris is a short one and we have a lot of ground to cover - not necessarily the big ticket items, but the little things. I love photography, and frankly, being on the metro or a bus may prevent me from getting a great shot. Or better yet, a park bench with our names on it. Or a cafe we would have missed. Or a fountain or square or alleyway... and the list could go on. We'll stop eventually and get on a bus or find a tourist trap to cool off in. Truthfully, just being in Paris whether we're sprinting 2 km or not, we'll be happy just being there. When I think about all of the opportunities I could have missed by riding on the subway in New York, I am thankful I walked. I think of it this way, it's one of those "already been there, done that" sort of thing. I can always catch the metro the 2nd time around. Riding on the metro is not a priority to me. Neither is using the public restrooms, but to others it is. To each his own.
