I really can't help with stars, but I think the best hotel in Devon would be Gidleigh Park. I would think it is only three stars, but it's still the best. Try www.theaa.com for star ratings. Gidleigh Park is owned and run by the Hendersons, Americans with a natural talent for the job.

One of the trendiest/priciest hotels in Cornwall is Tresanton in St Mawes. Again, I doubt it is five stars.

To Mike:

Thanks so much for your response. We are looking at Northcote Manor near Barnstaple, Combe House near Exeter and now The Gidleigh. (Paul henderson has already responded) Are you familiar with the other two?

Sorry for the double post! Left the PC for a while, must have been a slip of the mouse.

If you mean Combe House in Gittisham, I have been there. It is a lovely setting and a remarkable building, but it is in serious need of refurbishment. The price will tell you that it is quite a way downmarket from Gidleigh Park. Given your criteria, I think it will fall a bit short - which is a shame, because it has its charms.

Acquaintances of mine had a pleasant weekend at Northcote Manor a few years back. It used to have a Michelin rosette, and Michelin still give the hotel a high rating. So I cannot gainsay it, but I have no personal experience.

If you do settle on Gidleigh Park, I would ask Mr Henderson for his advice on other hotels in the South West. The web site gives generous praise to several restaurants (while I don't agree with it all absolutely, I think it is a solid list and a pretty commendable gesture).
