5 days in Switzerland - recommandations?
Hi all!
My DH and I will be travelling by car from Austria into Switzerland for 5 days next May and we have a vague plan.
1 night Lucern
2 nights Interlaken
2 nights Lautobrunnen or similar
We want to go on the railway, enjoy the scenery and maybe go for some walks.
Any suggestions as to itinerary, accomodation and info about the the rail
trip would be most appreciated.
Thankyou
Rosie

I'd recommend 2 nights in Lucerne and then 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen which is only a short train ride from Interlaken and much more scenic.
From Lauterbrunnen, you can go up to Schilthorn, maybe stopping off in Murren for a walk. Trummelbach Falls is also easily accessible from Lauterbrunnen. We stayed at the Oberland Hotel which has a great restaurant.
Would also recommend visits to Thun and Spiez on the Thunersee which can be reached via Interlaken.
In Lucerne, we stayed at the Des Balances Hotel right on the River but there are other good accommodations that you will find recommended here on Fodors.

Hi,
In my opinion, skip staying in Interlaken and stay in Lauterbrunnen ur preferably Wengen (my favorite). I'd go with 2 nights Lucerne and 3 nights in Wengen or Lauterbrunnen.
We stayed in Wengen at Hotel Eiger.

Here is a paragraph from my trip report from May 2006:
We stayed two nights at the Hotel des Alpes in Lucerne, www.desalpes-luzern.ch/, a five-minute walk from the train station (cross the river and turn left; the entrance is on the back side of the hotel, not the side facing the river). We arrived at 10:30 am and were greeted cheerfully with, “Yes, you may check in now.” We were given room 346 on the third floor with twin beds and a minuscule balcony overlooking Lucerne’s 14th century Chapel Bridge. The room was small but adequate, the beds comfortable. The location and view made it ideal. The recently renovated bathroom, with a shower stall, was also small but adequate. No air-conditioning. I’d heard that there could be a lot of noise at night. It was cool and damp the first evening keeping people away from the outside cafes, so we had peace and quiet. On the second night, we heard cheering until very late from the winners of a ballgame, although, with everything going so smoothly, nothing could have bothered us.

Rosie -
Keep in mind that May is low season and many hotels and restaurants in Wengen and Murren (and possibly Lauterbrunnen) could be closed. You don't mention when in May you're going, but the later you go the better your chances of finding places that are open in the alpine villages.
Have a great trip!
