We stayed at the St. Regis this past Feb/March. It was very nice, but I really didn't like the location as much as the place we stayed near the Piazza Navona. We did walk to most places from the St. Regis, but it's a pretty long walk to some of the sites.

We've stayed at the St. Regis and it is a beautiful hotel. It isn't "central" but we too walked just about everywhere, even with two young daughters. It is also across the street from a metro stop and several bus lines. But if you want a recommendation for a luxury hotel that is centrally located, that would be the de Russie.

We stayed at the Hotel de Russie last summer and loved it. The location is good (right off Piazza del Popolo and close to the Spanish Steps), but the highlight is the hotel's courtyard and garden for brerakfast and cocktails. Service was fabulous.

My recommendation is the Sofitel Roma. It is officially rated 4 stars and has 4-star-rates (at certain times, there are bargains), but rooms and service are certainly five stars (not the restaurant, but due to its central location, there is an abundance of restaurants in walking distance).
Just read the reviews on tripadvisor (I contributed one).
Since I travel five or six times per year to Rome, I cannot imagine a luxury hotel with a better value than the the Sofitel.
