St. Regis Grand
We made reservations at the St. Regis Grand Rome. We have some concerns after reading the Fodor's book. It says that it is not in the most salubrious or convenient spot. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or have stayed at St. Regis before?

We just stayed about 600 meters from there, 1/2 block west of Barberini. Had no problems at all. Used the buses a few times, walked a lot.
Your location is next to Piazza Repubblica... Most people posting here like to stay by Piazza Navona or Campo dei Fiori...

I've stayed at the St. Regis Grand. It's a wonderful hotel. You will be spoiled by the beautiful rooms and friendly, helpful staff. We didn't find the location to be awful. It is right across the street from the Metro stop and several bus lines stop at Piazza Repubblica too. We walked everywhere in any event, even pushing a toddler in a stroller and my husband sometimes carrying the six year old on his shoulders.

I've also stayed at the St Regis Grand and while I agree it is a superb and beautiful hotel, I din't like its location at all. Not in the best neighborood, no good restaurants or good shops around. And , on the contrary to Grinisa I found it very distant from the main sites.
The last time I was in Rome I stayed at the Albergo del Senato and liked it better than the St Regis, mainly because of its location.

We stay at the del Senato most of the time. Yes, you can't get more central than that, but Rome is compact. The historic center is tiny and even everything within the walls of the city is relatively close to each other. If you are in decent shape you can walk anywhere. I can't agree that its location is "very distant" from the main sites because in Rome, nothing is distant unless you are going outside the walls. If you are elderly, not physically fit or disabled that's another matter. The neighborhood isn't the most picturesque in Rome but neither is it seedy or dangerous. One of my favorite restaurants in Rome is very close by, Cantina Cantarini. And there is a fantastic tavola calda just across the street in the Galleria di Esedra called Dagino. Delicious food and pastries. Yes, there are more central hotels in Rome, but the St. Regis is a great property.

Just one thing: I am not elderly, nor disabled or phisically unfit but I din't like the location. The area is tacky! The shops are tacky!
I made my point you made yours. Can I have a different opinion about the location? Do you allow me? Thanks.

You will love the hotel. While is it not as centrally located as the Del Senato, there are several great sites to see within easy walking distance of the hotel. Such as the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and, one of the most beautiful small churches in all of Rome, Santa Maria Della Victoria (a must see IMO). You are within walking distance of the Piazza della Republica, which has some nice shops (along with a McDonald's just in case). You can also use the metro bus to get around, but lets face it, if you are staying at the St Regis, you can afford to walk to where you want to start for the day and take a taxi back or take one both ways. However, the flavor of Rome is best savored while walking the streets, or sitting in a 2500 year old piazza eating a freshly made gelato and watching world pass before your eyes. Have a great time, eat a gelato for me and throw a coin in the fountain.....
