So many differences in opinion. Personally, I do like Milan and it would be a shame not to spend a night there. Also, it would be sad to be this close to Switzerland and not be able to go there for at the least a day trip, preferably for a night in one of the lake towns such as Ascona (only about 10 minutes from the italian border). Switzerland has much more beauty with lakes and alps than Italy (although the southern part won't have the Alps, it is still very beautiful, clean etc.) I've visited all of central Europe countries several times over but Switzerland is the most impressive with it's nature and beautiful of all. Hi Ray,
I have to agree with everyone about Florence. 16 years ago it was my favorite city (well second Rome was and still is#1), now it is ALL Americans. In addition to the people visiting and traveling thru you have the cruiselines dumping so many people out at one time. Last year I took pictures just of the crowds, they were unbelievable.
I would cut Milan, turn Sorrento into Positano, spend 2 nights in Florence then go to Cinque Terres for a few days. The area is fun and beautiful. You can hike from one town to another, in the hills, overlooking the sea...wow! or take the train from town to town and enjoy a romantic drink by the sea, which you could do 5 times! . We were only able to see 3 out of the 5 towns, so I am going back in August to see the rest (and the other 3 again!)
Another charming place is Lucca which is near Cinque Terres.
So much to see......
Have a wonderful trip.
Laura
