So you want to eat Finnish. Ok, on top of those Carelian pies (a snack) there are:

- all kinds of domestic fish (fish soup is often very good)
- reindeer in all its forms
- prey when it is hunting season
- meatballs (I think just about every country has its own version)
- forest mushrooms
- all kinds of berries both wild and cultivated
- fish eggs (orange, not black caviar)- root vegetables in many forms

There are every year 10-15 restaurants in Helsinki that serve so called Helsinki Menu. It is composed of typically Finnish food. And every year they are rated. Last year numer 1 was Rastaurant Nokka (near Euroohostel), second was Restaurant Kuu (a on the other side of the main street from the National Opera, a little uphill, and third was Ravintola Kellarikrouvi. Here is Kellarikrouvi´s Helsinki Menu:Terrine of smoked salmon, potato salad with horseradish, fried brioche

Gentle Hills Riesling, Germany 5,30/32

Entrecôte of Åland lamb braised in mild garlic broth, root vegetable purée

and flat-leaf parsley sauce

Sileni Cellar Selection Pinot Noir, New Zeeland 8,00/48

White chocolate and cranberry cake with vodka-flavoured cranberry sorbet

Brown Brothers Orange Muscat&Flora, Australia 8,80

And sorry, my browser is too old to perform. The text comes out funny, and I cannot correct anything.

Thanks for all the information. I have a home exchange north of Helsinki this summer in July and August. I will be gone 4 weeks--3 weeks in the exchange home and another week tooling around near Helsinki. I do plan to take the ferry to Tallin, but not to buy liquor.
