20 hours at Standsted in August

At the back end of our weeks in France this summer, we have a one night stay between flights in and out of Standsted. It would be a shame to waste the few UK hours we have by staying in an airport hotel. With only one evening to cap off our holiday, can anyone recommend something special?

Q1 - what time do you arrive at Stansted, what time do you leave from Stansted?

Q2 - would you like to be near the airport or would you prefer to go 30 minutes down the road to somewhere like Cambridge?

We arrive on Ryanair (from Perpignan) at 2:40 in the afternoon. Our flight out is at noon the next day.

We have no interest in staying near the airport, and Cambridge sounds so much more appealing.

Cambridgte would be the logical choice. It is a beautiful city and convenient for Stansted.

I'd agree with Cambridge, much better than staying at some crummy airport hotel.

Just a couple of things to point out

a) the train station isn't in the centre of Cambridge (allegedly so the students wouldn't be disturbed by train whistles)

b) the train service isn't too frequent - typically 2 trains per hour & it takes about 35 minutes each way

Or in not much longer on the train you'd be in London.

Alan - thanks so much. Can you recommend an inn or smallish hotel that might be near the centre of town, so that we can make the most of our evening by going walkies after dinner?
