2 weeks in Lisbon and Southern Portugal with toddler

We will be in Portugal for 2 weeks in the beginning of July. We plan to visit Lisbon, rent a car and drive South and then back up. I don't think we have enough time to go North to Porto and still have a relaxed vacation. We are a couple with an 18 month old toddler. We would like a relaxed trip, with some beach time, good local food, some nature/hiking, culture (not museums but local towns and architecture). Any suggestions for a rough itinerary and where to base ourselves?

I take it this is July 2014, and not next year. Depending on your budget, and availability of accommodations, you can spend the first few days in Lisbon before picking up your rental car and heading down to the Algarve.

You should check out the following websites for information on the area:

Yes this for the beginning of July 2014. Now that I've looked at it, it might make sense to fly into Porto, base ourselves in Porto for say 4 days and see the surrounding Duoro Valley etc, take a train or car down to Lisbon, spend 5 days there, and then drive down to the Algarve and base ourselves somewhere like Albuferia or Lagos and spend 5-7 days, then make our way back to Lisbon and fly home. Any recommendations for towns/resorts down in the Algarve? We would be interested in beautiful beaches with calm swimmable water for our child, good restaurants and seafood, no crazy parties, not too worried about crowds as long as they are not wild.

I'm also considering the Alentejo region as it may offer more of a relaxed local flavor - any beaches/resorts here that are safe for small children? i.e. no big waves, rocks, good swimming. The Algarve sounds nice, but seems I will be in peak tourist season with hoards of rowdy British and German tourists - perhaps western Algarve?

I have never been to the Algarve. But we did spend a delightful week in Portugal on the coast North of Lisbon.
We stayed in Sao Martinho do Porto. This town is wonderful for children as the beach area is a cove which is very calm for small children. It is also very close to some of the top tourist places in Portugal like Alcobaca if you think your children will tolerate some sightseeing.

The town is very small and non touristy. We were there in August and although surrounding towns are packed with tourists it is still rather quiet.

Anyway, you may want to Google the area. We find the coast of Portugal very lovely.

After a lot more reading, we've got a rough itinerary:

Fly into Porto July 2014 2nd week and out of Lisbon 2 weeks later (15 full days):

Day 1: Porto

Days 2 & 3: Douro Valley - not sure whether to hire a car or take a train. We would like to stay at a Quinta or somewhere in a nice setting (farm, etc.) and interested in the scenery, wine and local produce. Any recommendations would be great. What mode of transportation would be better and what place would make a good base?

Day 4: Drive to Coimbra and stay overnight at Palace hotel de Bucaco

Day 5: Obidos

Day 6: Sintra

Days 7,8,9,10: Lisbon - probably the Baixa/Chiado area

Days 11,12: Alenteje area - thinking Odeceixe or Vila Nova Milfontes. Would like to get more of a local experience, perhaps stay in a 'Turismo Real', would like to try local food

Days 13-15: Algarve - Lagoa area seems nice - can visit some nice beaches (Praia da Marinha, Praia do Carvalho, Carvoeiro, Praia da Rocha, Praia Dona Ana all seem nice) and Lagos - what would be a good base? We don't want to visit all those beaches, but would like to stay on a beach or close to one (short walk or drive) and would like be able to get to restaurants close by easily.

Given that we are traveling with a toddler (who can be quite fussy) is this too busy a trip?
We don't want to have a car in Lisbon so would drop off the car in Lisbon if we hired one in Porto and then would rent another car from Lisbon to visit the South.
Would love to hear suggestions on transport options and good places to base ourselves in the North and the South.
