We just got back from Venice - stayed at the Hotel Rialto in a 4 bedded room on the Grand Canal. It was great - high ceilings, venetian glass chandelier, minibar, comfortable. The wooden shutters on the windows keep any noise out when you want to sleep.
Call or email the hotel directly and ask about availability of canal view rooms. Have fun - we loved it!

When we stayed at the San Moise this past september, we had a room with a view of the canal, bkfst. included. Cost $ 250 p/nite.
Early every morning, the gondolas would start around 7AM unloading supplies and building materiales, right in front of our room. Craking and rasping sounds being then, our wake up call. Very charming indeed to be woken up at the ungodly hour during our vacation. We stayed only 2 days, so we didn't make any fuss over this and just made sure we checked into quiter hotels in Florence, Rome and Paris.

Ana

Stayed in room 402 at the Rialto this past April. From this board learned it had a balcony and was the largest of the balcony rooms. We loved the room, a little pricey but worth it. The largest room we've ever had in Europe. Can be a little noisy at times from the canal traffic but it was great fun to watch the morning deliveries by boat. Also centrally located near tourist areas (San Marcos) nad also quieter areas.
