1st trip to Croatia and Zagreb

We are leaving mid April for our 1st trip to Zagreb and Croatia. Any recommendations, sights, shopping, day trips, etc? We are going to be in Zagreb for 6 days. Thanks for the help.

Hello

OK, I think Zagreb is a great place to see... When you arrive to Zagreb, take your time... Zagreb isn't a big city but you can explore it in 2 days. Most of the sights are in the city center (the Cathedral, the historical Upper town, green promenades...)There are some great parks to walk around: Botanical garden, Maksimir park... Maybe you could visit one of Zagreb's many museums (Mimara museum, Archaeological museum, The Zagreb City museum...)
I hope you will have nice weather so you could enjoy drinking coffee in one of many Zagreb's bars and terraces or walk around open markets and shopping malls... For a day trip I suggest Plitvice lakes, then Croatian Zagorje (wine hills, castles and great food) you can check this link for day trips, sightseeing, accommodation or Zagreb in general.

Bye

I too really enjoyed Zagreb. The cathedral is gorgeous and definitely worth your time. There is a nice pedestrian only area with lots of shops and restaurants.

We drove to Varazdin for an afternoon and really enjoyed ourselves. Varazdin is a very pretty town filled with colorful baroque architecture and interesting restaurants and shops. The drive up this way, through the hills, is very scenic and unlike other parts of Croatia. There is a also a castle, but we did not get a chance to visit. http://www.croatia.hr/English/Destin...estination=463

We did not get a chance to visit Plitvice but it looks spectacular and is also close by.

On the route from Zagreb to Pitlivice, you will see a number of roadside country restaurants with open pits where they spit roast whole pigs and perhaps sheep. I don't know if they will be open so early in the year, but they made me drool as I drove by, sadly unable to stop.

pig and lamb on the spit! great stuff!
it's no problem to find it in this time of the year... there is a good restaurant in Plitvice - Licka Kuca. they have all those local, Croatian specialties...
