Another suggestion for activity in Venice -- consider seeing a Vivaldi concert. We saw Interpreti Veneziani perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons and it ended up being a great experience. Accademia Di San Rocco also performs and I hear it is a notch above IV.

Orseolo secured our tickets for us (we paid for them in cash when we checked out). Your hotel (hopefully Orseolo) should also be able to help you unless you prefer to buy the tickets on your own!

J,

Just FYI, if you have trouble getting the dates you want on venere.com, contact the hotel directly via e mail. Most of them have web sites it you search a little.

I planned my last trip using venere.com -- but when I tried to get my dates, the hotels always came up as "not available". When I contacted them directly, I got everything I wanted.

I don't know if this is because I was booking so far ahead or not. Maybe the hotels don't open their rooms to venere.com unless they have too-- due to slow bookings.

Buon viaggio!

We are at the Ala at the beginning of March. I am way too distracted to remember the exact dates: we are dying because we gave birth to Bridezilla, and her wedding if 4 days away.

BUT I wrote directly to the hotel and asked in a very nice way for the best deal they could give us on the deluxe canal view room If I were you, I would give it a try. They sent a price that was beyond belief for the same room we had six years ago.

We're supposed to nail down our dates tomorrow night. I'll write them Thursday. Thanks for the tip.

Best wishes with the wedding...it'll be a blur and then you'll wonder what to do with yourself!

jt,
we stayed at a beautiful little hotel in Venice called Hotel Antiche Figure. It's literally across the Grand Canal from the train station. You walk out the door, across the bridge, and one or two doors to your right is the hotel. We opted to pay a little more for a canal-front room with a little Juliet balcony that overlooked the gondolas. The room was quiet and beautiful, the bathroom was gorgeous, there was plenty of closet space, the hotel was immaculately clean and the breakfast was plentiful. It's a 3-star hotel but seems higher. The website is www.hotelantichefigure.it and it's the building right next to the church with the green dome. It looks plain from the outside but it's really lovely inside.

Yet again, I thank everyone that has replied so far to this post. I have spent the past few days looking at so many hotels now and I am amazed at what I see out there. I have taken in everyone's suggestions so far and should book my stays here within the next few days. I will keep everyone posted on where I decide as well as repost after I have taken the trip. All of this information has been so very helpful and I am glad that everyone one of you took out some of your time to give me your two cents (or more)!

Jean, you are very welcome...this was purely voluntary and I am glad I am out here trying to make a difference. Thanks for your gratitude for that is all we out here love to hear from everyone back home..."thanks." I am glad to do what I do for all of you! All I can say is that I can't wait for this vacation!!

Hello jtgixxer, I just saw your thread for the first time, don't know how I missed it.

I am so happy that you will be able to take a break from your time in Iraq and consequently have a vacation (a R&R) in beautiful Italy. I looks like you have received some wonderful information from all the good and kind Fodorites.

I wish you and your love a beautiful time in Italy. And I would like to add my "thank you" to you also for your contribution to making the world a better place. May you always be safe, healthy and return home eventually to a beautiful life. My best wishes to you.
