1st time to Grenoble

My husband and I will be visiting our DD in Grenoble for a few days in May. We'd like to take an overnight trip to Annecy which our DD says is one of the most beautiful places she's seen. Yvoire sounds beautiful too. Would it make sense to stay overnight in Annecy and then drive on to Yvoire and return to Grenoble the same day? Or can anyone suggest any other towns or villages to visit? We're interested in history, beautiful scenery and easy walking/hiking. A cable car ride would also be great.

Also looking for recommendations for small B&Bs or country inns to stay hopefully in the 100E price range.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kiddo

Last year, we spent 2 weeks in a gite in Talloires on Lake Annecy, and 1 night in Yvoire.

I think an overnight in Annecy would be just fine - if you want to see Annecy itself and drive around the lake & stop at a few spots. Shops close on Sunday & Monday morning - so don't do it then. Wait till the weather is nice before you go.

Yvoire is quite small, and I'm not sure it is worth it to drive there and reduce the time in Annecy. When we were there in June, they were working on the freeway heading north from Annecy, and some of the junctions were not completed at that time. Other than Yvoire, we found nothing on the south shore of Lake Geneva that interested us.

my recollection is that Annecy, whilst beautiful, is not small, and a search for "hotels in annecy" brought up at least 10.

in May, you might think about going "on spec" and not booking in advance.

Thanks Stu and Ann. We were planning to go on Sun and stay over, but we may have to rethink that if the stores are closed. We'll arrive in Grenoble on Friday night and really only planned to stay until Tuesday at the latest.

I was hoping to find a charming B&B or country inn - does anyone have any recommendations?

Go Saturday. Annecy is very festive Saturday night, and on Sunday morning there is a nice/scenic outdoor street market that runs along the canals. Return to Grenoble after the market.

Sounds like a plan.

We're considering Chappet House. Has anyone stayed there, have info on the location etc. or suggest others?
