1st sunday of the month and museum

I understand that on the first Sunday of the month museums are free. Are there lines to get in on these days? What are the best museums/monuments to go to on that day?
I appreciate all suggestions. thanks.

Hi kma,

Am I correct that you are referring to Paris?

As you might expect, the free admission increases the number of people who wish to go.

Yes, there are big crowds. To me it's worth paying the fee at another time amd avoiding the madhouse.

sorry, yes, I meant paris. We are going to get the 3 day pass for the Mon-Wed. We are planning to go to Versaille on the Tuesday. We thought we might get a couple places in on the Sunday.
So, if there are any that wouldn't be so bad on Sunday, please let me know. Thanks.

the best ones to go to are the small ones that interest you.
There are small museums that hardly ever have a line (the Carnavalet is just one) but I don't know which ones you are considering.

I don't think that the privately-run museums, like the Marmottan, are free on those Sundays.

www.paris.org is just one place to browse for museums

I just went to Marmottan in March. The bottom floor with Monet paintings was awesome.

By chance I was at the Louvre on the first Sunday of the month last April. Initially, I was puzzled by no lines and no payment, then I asked. The Louvre is always busy (except Monday evenings, in my experience). The 1st Sunday crowd seemed no busier than average.
