10th arr. query

Hey guys,
My partner and I are having a whirlwind 3 day visit to Paris (first timers) and our accomodation is in the 10th. I have read some really cool stuff about other parts of Paris, but nothing regarding there. Unfortunately we are sooo frigging excited, therefore would love a little taste of what to expect around that area eg. favourite cafe? Any backstreet gem you would like to share?
Oh and has anyone stayed at Relais de Paris Lafayette? Any tips?
Thanks in advance! OMG I am so excited i could pee my pants!! OOPS!

This is very close to Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est, which some of us consider to be an interesting ethnic neighborhood (Pakistani, Kurdish) and others claim is an abominable hellhole. You will find big typical Parisian cafés and restaurants directly across from the Gare du Nord -- particularly the spectacular Terminus Nord. If you go over towards the Canal Saint Martin, which runs through the 10th, you'll find a lot of chic hangouts for the "bobos" (bourgeois bohemians). If you stray as far as Place and rue Sainte Marthe, near the Hôpital Saint Louis, you will find some truly alternative establishments.
But keep in mind that the 10th is just a small part of Paris, and you won't really be spending most of your time there on such a short visit.
