My wife and I have two nights in Frankfurt scheduled on our way back from Malta in October, 2014. We arrive around 6pm on a Monday, have the whole following day, and leave on a 1pm flight then next day.

We've never been to Frankfurt (except the airport), so I'd love to hear your suggestions as to how we should spend our time.

My initial plan is to stay at Le Meridien (I have a lot of SPG points), but beyond that I don't really have any idea.

Consider going from the airport to the Rhine.

It's so easy to get from the airport into town.

My other recommendation is to see the Chagall windows in Mainz, about 45 minutes from Frankfurt. I realize you'll probably have your fill of churches after visiting Malta but this church is very different from those on Malta and the windows are among the best I've ever seen.

If you wanted to take a day trip to the Rhein as well as see a little of FRA, then you could check in to your hotel on the first night, take a walk up to Roemerplatz (dinner in any of the restaurants on the square is good) as it's pretty a night, before going back to your hotel. The next day you could take a day trip to the Rhein (plenty of tour companies, ask at your hotel). They usually take from around 10am to 6-7pm, so it's an all day thing. The next morning you could have a leisurely breakfast/brunch on the Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse. Locals call it "Fressgasse" as it's full of cafes and restaurants (Fressen is German for feeding/grazing, usually for animals, but slang for eating). Then go out to the airport.

If, however, you want to go to Mainz for the Chigall windows and see a little more of Frankfurt, then you could satisfy any river requirements by taking a cruise on the Main River from the docks near Roemerplatz. Many last around 60-90mins so you could still go to Roemerplatz on arrival night, then on your full day work out the train to Mainz with the timetable for the cruises and go from there. They are a good way to see the city from a different perspective and if the weather is good a nice way to spend a few hours.

The only problem is that the hotels in Frankfurt all seem to have some kind of commission thing going with ETS tours which are just basic bus tours going to the Rhein. ETS is the only company you will find the hotels are selling, though if you ask the concierge in certain hotels, they might have some other recommendations for some private tour guides.

This is an easy trip to do on your own, using the trains, and for the price that ETS is charging, around 85 € per person, you could have a fabulous dinner instead. Read the reviesws on Trip Advisor for the Rhine bus tours or on the Viator website, which is another big ETS tour bus re-seller.

I wouldn't recommend any of the restaurants around the Römer. Most of them are over-priced with food that isn't that great. The only two that are sort of near-by would be Paulaner behind the Kaiserdom, or Leib & Seele, near the Hauptwache.

Better is to go to Sachsenhausen to Atschel or Dauth Schneiders. or head over to the neighborhood of Bornheim and the Berger Str. to some applewine pubs. Recommended are Apfelwein Solzer or Zur Sonne. Another wonderful area is the neighborhood of Höchst, where you can sit on the city walls next to the old schloss and eat at Alte Zollwache.

I ate at Paulaner, based on Mainhattengirl's recommendation and loved it. Food was good and the staff was friendly.
