CC roll calls are great. They're informal and vary from cruise to cruise. We're doing back to back (B2B) cruises across the Atlantic then the Norwegian Fjords--same ship, consecutive cruises. The transatlantic roll call is very active, with two luncheons, a slot pull, a two lies and a truth competition, knitters, bridge and mahjong players all getting together on the long, lovely sea days. Participation is optional in any of the activities, but the opportunity is there if you want. It's a great way to connect (or not) with your fellow passengers. The greatest advantage to us is being able to plan private excursions with others on the ship (this is done on line prior to sailing) which is much less expensive than the ship's excursions, usually uses a minivan, and avoids lumbering through the port city and countryside in a 50-passenger bus. If you're not sure about participating in your ship's roll call, go ahead and lurk. No one will know the difference.

You can use the roll call forum to get info or connect with others to share private (non-cruise) group tours on the same cruise date. It's basically a forum for that particular cruise You don't have to sign up for the 'gtg" style= meeting which might be arranged for roll call participants..BTW they aren't always worthwhile. Some people do share their cabin numbers and personal information but I didn't.If someone has a arranged a non-cruise company they will either tell you to contact them by email or give you the tour company details and tell you to sign up directly with them..

It's also a good way to get info about hotels in the cruise ports, transfers, which excursions to do, etc. Often others have already done the research or even are repeating the same cruise multiple times.
